Stop making your Off-Tank do Your Job!

Situation 1: You do the work!
As the main tank, you have to do Thunderclap, Demoralizing Shout, and Commanding Shout when:

  • The off-tank has to catch up on threat.
  • The dps has to stay below the off-tank on threat.
  • Examples: Moroes, Void Reaver, Gruul (melee)

Situation 2: They do the work!
As the main tank, you should only be focusing on generating threat and the off-tank should be handling Sunders, Thunderclap, Commanding Shout and Demoralizing Shout when:

  • The dps has to stay behind you on threat.
  • Examples: Netherspite, Onyxia, Magtheridon

Plan then Tank

Always think about what the goal of the fight is. Main Tanks will often sink into situation 2 because its easier on them, but in the end there is no point in being at 100,000 threat if your off-tank is at 20,000 threat on Moroes.

Note: As Main Tank you should always be using Shield Block. Crushing Blows = Bad

Note2: The ideal rotation for an off-tank is Shield Slam, Devastate, Devastate when your goal is to catch up on threat.

Interesting. In the past my guild has always done alot of just having two tanks spam everything under the sun to gain/maintain aggro. They never really discuss rotations of abilities. I’ve only ever tanked/offtanked with one other person who would discuss tanking/offtanking with me. However, our guild was so hurt for tanks that him and I were hardly ever tanking the same target.

Probably a good idea for your off-tanks to have 2/5 improved Demo Shout. Or at least pressure your dps warriors into getting it.
