3 Shields, 3 Enchants, 3 Situations
All good things come in 3s.
-
Progression
-
Threat
-
5 mans
[item]Merciless Gladiator's Shield Wall[/item] + 18 Stamina
[item]Aldori Legacy Defender[/item] + 18 Block Value
[item]Shield of Impenetrable Darkness[/item] + [item]Felsteel Shield Spike[/item]
What if I’m not there yet?
18 Stamina all the way.
When your gear is still progressing you’ll have plenty of Rage due to low armor and low avoidance meaning that Threat generation shouldn’t be your primary concern. Staying Alive should be.

I don’t know anyting about Arena…
1. Who wants a prot warrior on their arena team?
2. What is the best way for a prot warrior to do JUST enough arena for the shield?
3. How long will #2 take?
Thanks.

Spec arms/fury for once per week, do your 10 arena games (preferably with a 5v5, since you get a ton more points) and hopefully be done within a few weeks.
Still, I’ve even heard Prot Warrior can be irritating to other teams (conc blow, imp. revenge, int. shout etc.), and their may very well be room for one a 5v5.

If you are in a guild, form a 5v5 team. Even if you suck and you will (I am no exception), it will take worst case 6 weeks to get. I will be the first to admit that I am not a PvP’er. I am only doing it to get this shield. If you can afford it, re-spec to arms or fury and have fun, but I remain Prot to harass and disrupt. As you continue to upgrade your PvP gear your game will improve. It’s a marathon not a sprint.

Thanks for the help, folks. I’ll chat with the guild about starting an Arena team. I’ll probably just stay PROT and serve to irritate and annoy.

These days since I have cash to burn I do spec MS, but even before when I’d PvP as prot spec I used my MS gear. You still have access to Whirlwind and Concussion Blow/Last Stand offer survivability that MS can’t boast.
I’d recommend that if you are doing 2v2 that you couple yourself with another DPS class because you simply won’t be able to do enough DPS to be the only source of damage. That being said everyone else that’s commented is right, just find yourself a 5v5 team and get in 10 games each week.
If you have a 5v5 team:
1581 rating = 4 weeks to get shield
1497 rating = 5 weeks to get shield
1334 rating = 6 weeks to get shield

My guild had formed a 5v5 team, where I was allowed to join and ‘leech’ some arena points. To be honest, having a prot warrior doesn’t really add alot to the team, but my friends were willing to let me tag along for the points, as the shield could only help with the progressive encounters for the guild.
Misconception is that you need to get in 10 games a week.
Only the TEAM needs to play 10 games a week, whereas any individual member needs to have played at least 30% of the games. So actually, the prot warrior only needs to play 3 games each week on the 5v5 team,
then swap out for another member, and still qualify for some arena points.

What Phule said is very true, if you don’t have the cash to burn to be a chronic respeccer, just get in with a few friends and do the 3 obligatory games while letting the rest of the team finish out for you. This will probably even ensure a better rating for a faster shield.

A prot warrior may be one of the most frustrating matchups in a 1v1 (Except for a mage). Getting hit for 2k from a friggin shield slam is ghey ghey ghey.

You can also just make a 3v3 and find an arena rating service on your server (if there is one). My guild had farmed Gruul for 4 months and never saw one shield drop. So myself (MT) and a couple other guild protties made a 3v3 team. We paid the service 600g to get a 2100 rating and got almost 900 points for that week. Then we just tanked games every week until we got the amount needed for the shield. So it took about 200g each and 3 weeks. Not a bad price to pay for a shield so good.
As a side note, the week we all got the points needed for the shields, Gruul dropped the first (and only) shield our guild has seen and I got to spend my arena points on dps gear!
Some might have some moral dilemma about doing this. I say screw it. Blame blizz for putting PVE gear into the arena system!
Also we couldn’t get below 1300 rating for the life of us when we actually played the games. I think that’s the bracket where people’s intelligence just drops. I don’t see any other reason for them to lose to 3 prot warriors!

My main concern with instances right now is the heroic ones. Low armor (12.5k) => much damage => lots of heals => healer pulls aggro easily.
I have about 12 k health so np for healer to keep me up as long as not over aggroing, specifically if I hold 2 hard hitting mobs at once.
Shall I go for [Felsteel Shield Spike] or +18 SBV to gain more threat? Multi mob tanking seems logically to correspond to shield spike - and single mob tanking to SBV. Am I right?

Felsteel Shield Spike generates more threat than 18 SBV regardless what you are tanking (unless its something you can’t block on of course) whether its one mob or many.
The advantage SBV has is it’s a mitigation stat as well since it contributes to how much you block. That being said, I think you’ll really enjoy the Shield Spike and I recommend it.

I wonder if anybody even reads this… but how would you count [item]Bulwark of the Amani Empire[/item] in? Especially if someone didn’t have the Merciless Shield Wall, like me. =)
ATM i’m using the [item]Aldori Legacy Defender[/item] for pretty much everything except Hydross and some other situations where i can not maintain 490 Def.
Tonight i got the Bulwark and now i’m wondering how to gem and enchant it, and if it will be useful for something other than raising my shield slams a bit in 5-mans and PVP.

add: using [item]Gladiator’s Shield Wall[/item] (not Merciless) for Hydross and such.

Would the new Shattered Sun shield, Dawnforged Defender replace Impenetrable Darkness as the 5-man shield? Same armour and SBV, only 2 less stam, and it trades defense for some SBR and +13 Hit.
My guild is over Gruul and the only time I’ve seen NB’s shield it was an upgrade for the OT, so I’m using my S2 shield with +18 stam for everything, can’t wait to grab this new one and chuck a felsteel spike on it for 5-mans.
P.S. how do I make item links?
