Parry Explained
axemaster asks - “Does parry give bonus haste to the next melee attack? If it does going heavily into parry would help your threat gen and your avoidance.”
Parry makes me attack faster?
Yes, after a parry your next attack is going to come faster. How much faster is random with an increase in speed by as much as 40%.
So, Parry > Dodge?
Essentially, yes it is. However, you won’t see as much Parry Rating on a same level item as Dodge Rating for that very reason.
Wait, but Bosses Parry too!
Yup. A tank can die pretty quickly as a result of Melee DPS getting their attacks parried. This can easily be avoided though by the Melee DPS hitting the boss in the back. (not to mention they’ll do more DPS this way too)
Should I go out of my way to get Parry?
An interesting choice:
Iron Gauntlets of the Maiden vs Warbringer Handguards.
My personal choice is to use the gloves off Maiden in most situations due to a higher stamina element coupled with additional block value. I’ll use the Tier 4 gloves when I need to off-tank something like High King Mulgar.
Note: 23.6 Parry Rating = 1% parry

If you had to choose between not wearing 2 peices of your T4 and therefore losing blade turning or adding the additional block value and stamina which way would you go?

@Annalyze:
I have that very same situation and I only where 2 pieces for the bonus when I have to off-tank per say like on High King Mulgar. The 2 piece T4 set bonus really just decreases rage so I don’t like it for regular tanking.
@axemaster:
If you have 490 defense, the pocketwatch offers so much avoidance its hard to pass up coupled with an amazing usage on only a 2 minute timer. It’s really the clear winner. Onyxia’s Blood Talisman should be used instead if you haven’t reached 490 defense or obviously when you need Fire Resistance.

Actually, the speed reduction is up to 40%, in all cases except when it would make the attack faster than (I think it was this number) 20% of the initial speed. A detailed study on this can be found in the elitistjerks forums.

You are correct. I’ve update the OP to reflect that. Those interested in the Elitistjerk’s thread mentioned above can follow the following link:

So I have two epic parry gems (Splendid Fire Opals, +5 Parry Rating and +4 Resilience) which I am considering putting in the gloves from the Maiden, to solidify them as a solid piece of my gear for a while. The dilemma I am having is that to do so, I have to lose 24 stamina, due to the loss of the solid stars that will be overwritten. I will now get the set bonus from the gloves (*golfclap?*) Am I nuts?
FYI we are hitting up the Opera soon.
Great resource here at Tankingtips.com. Amazing work!

@Rek: Honestly, ya you are kinda nuts
I’d just stick with the 24 stamina myself.
