Warning: 490 Defense does not make you Immune to Crushing Blows
It’s time we set the record straight because a lot of people just aren’t getting it.
1. Crushing Blows are not Critical hits
A Crushing Blow is 150% damage of a normal hit. A Critical hit is 200% damage of a normal hit. They both suck.
2. 490 Defense = Immune to Critical hits
You can stop the worst of the above two bad apples by simply getting 490 Defense. This is because an enemy mob’s critical hit chance is 5% at level 70 and 5.6% at level 73. (490 Defense makes you immune to crits from level 73 mobs)
3. Shield Block Active = Immune to Crushing Blow
Given that you have even poor tanking gear, if you use Shield Block then you will not be Crushing Blowed. A fast attacking mob can consume the 2 charges from Shield Block.

This Avoidence Macro (reposted from Blessing of Kings blog ) is quite handy for checking to see if one is immune to a crushing blow when shield block or any other spell is active. Please note that it assumes 5 points in Anticipation.
