5 Ways to Combine Resilience and Defense

One of the most common things I’m asked is how good is resilience for a tank? The reality is that if you have 490 Defense Resilience is completely worthless. This list is if you don’t have that, but still want to be immune to critical hits.

  • [item]Merciless Gladiator's Shield Wall[/item]
  • 31 Resilience + 471 Defense = Immune to Crit.

  • [item]Gauntlets of the Iron Tower[/item]
  • 26 Resilience + 474 Defense = Immune to Crit.

  • [item]Merciless Gladiator's Plate Chestpiece[/item]
  • 24 Resilience + 475 Defense = Immune to Crit.

  • [item]Helm of the Stalwart Defender[/item]
  • 23 Resilience + 476 Defense = Immune to Crit.

  • [item]Merciless Gladiator's Plate Shoulders[/item]
  • 20 Resilience + 478 Defense = Immune to Crit.

Note: 39.4 Resilience = 60 Defense Rating = 25 Defense Skill = 1% less chance of being Crit.

thanks for this… I was wondering how in the world I could carry both of my trinkets and remain 490. I have the helm, so it this should do it! Appreciate the site,

I was just thinking about that actually… I have my Merc Glad Shield and chest and my Def is down to 497, but my resilience is 55. I’ve been wanting to replace any gems with def with solid stars, but I’d be ashamed to have my def drop below 490…but in reality I’d be fine cause of my resilience. /is a slave to the numbers…

In case you wanted to know Tara… :D

(that being said lowering your defense does result in a loss in avoidance)

I’ve done a better job of clarifying my point in the post. I was talking about Resilience in regards to being completely worthless once someone obtains 490 defense.

In particular, Resilience is very useful against Hydross and his adds. The [item]Merciless Gladiator’s Shield Wall[/item] is particularly excellent.

The much-maligned [item]Elixir of Ironskin[/item] is something worth considering for resist fights.

Is it really worthless ? Does not resilience also reduce the amount of damage taken via a critical hit that it stops ? Of course, if you’re over 490 defense,
with some resilience gear as well, there’s no easy way to determine whether the critical hit that was ’stopped’ was because of the 490 defense, or the resilience gear.

  9. admin Says:

Resilience is worthless once you are 490 Defense. This is because you become immune to Critical hits at this point.

  10. Grimgorr Says:

Resilience only mitigates damage from a critical hit IF you are critically hit. If you have 490 defense, you will never be critically hit; therefore, any +resilience you have mitigates zero damage from any critical hits…. since you’re NEVER getting critically hit. Not sure how else to say it.

Really nice to see this compilation. I asked that very same question ovet at Tankspot.com and didn’t get a response this good!

I am about to get Helmet of the Stalwart Defender and Merciless Gladiator’s Shield Wall. That would get me to only need 357 in defence to make me uncrittable. Nice!

But I do shudder to explain it to the n00bs that wonder if I reached the uncrittable cap…

Don’t forget that when 2.2 eventually comes out, resilience WILL reduce the damage done by DoTs. So not COMPLETELY useless, then, but still not something I’m going to itemize for.

I have a question - does 490 defense reduce the chance to be critically hit by spells?

  15. Thoroko Says:

Spells in PVE from mobs cannot crit… ever. There’s no need to worry about that :)

I currently use the merciless gladiator’s shield and shoulders while tanking, but I still don’t like to drop down too far in defense due to the loss in mitigation. :(

  16. Kennetco Says:

Does Res stack? In context, does 490 def = 350 Res = ‘non-critable’? Does 410 def and 100 res (res coming from various items) combine enough to become non-crittable?

  17. Deliciouss Says:

Resilience is worthless for stopping crit if you have 490 defense, but is it also worthless for fights with periodic damage?

  18. RAGED1 Says:

Here’s a question? If you’re at 490 defense and have 90 resilience, would it have any effect on the amount of rage generated. I used to be at 490 and had resilience of about 10-15 and it seemed that I generated much more rage than I do now.

  19. Mandorat Says:

So if I have 5 pieces of Merciless Glad gear and the Shat. Sun Shield and Tank sword and the alchemy tank trinket from Shat. Sun rep and the +20 def from prot tree; that would give me 150 Res and roughly 390 defense. With the calculations above 150 res = 95 def. Add to all of this a def enchant on chest and bracers and Khara should be a breeze for me to tank right?

It depends on so many other factors. With that much crit reduction from resilience, you’re losing out on a huge amount of dodge, parry and miss (the other benefits of defense). As a result your base health is going to need to be higher to compensate.

You also have to think about one other thing. PVP Gear usually has a marginally greater amount of stamina on it, and since a majority of people are going hell into stamina stacking (I know I am) the resilience arena gear helps me get more stamina, while keeping me uncrittable.

Question..i have 470 defense if i spec prot…in my prot gear right now i also have 121 resilience…If my math is correct…that would look like this

470 Defense rating + 121 resilience would make my uncrittable…but

    since 121 resilience is what….?

every 39.4 res = 60 defense rating and also = 25 defense points like it states above..would that then mean

from the 121 resi. im gaining 75 defense points?? if thats true i would then i have…

470 defense+ the other 75 from resilience that would put me at…

470+75= 545 defense? would that then make me 1. Uncrittable and 2. Uncrushable?
    HELP!

Arvernien reply on September 23, 2008 9:20 am:

The 121 resiliance is only adding 3.07% crit chance reduction not defense skill. In terms of crit reduction 39.4 resiliance = 1% crit reduction and 60 defense rating = 25 defense skill = 1% crit chance reduction.

With your 121 resiliance you need a defense skill of 413 to reach uncrittable - so you have achieved uncrittable.

You have a defense rating around 240 another 50 points and you will reach 490 defense and can drop the resiliance gear.

Uncrushable at your defense skill is only possible when you activate shield block. (passive uncrushable is very challenging to achieve - but can be done - there are other posts here with advice on how to do it).

I’ve heard that resiliance ONLY works in PvP. But in PvE its useless. I guess thats completely wrong. But please confirm.

They removed crushing blows with patch 3.0.2.

You’re definitely uncrittable in your setup. In fact, you could drop down to about 40 resilience and still stay uncrittable.

Meatgazer reply on November 10, 2008 6:57 am:

Check that, I read that as defense skill, not defense rating.

With that defense rating, you’re uncrittable and the resilience is a wasted stat.
