1 Gun. The only 1 you need.

The Destroyer represents the single best investment you can make once reaching level 70. There exists no craftable item for tanking with more longevity than this gun. It’s a must have and there is no excuse for a tank not to have one.

I agree completely. We’re on Kael’thas at the moment and have Vashj down.
Other guilds on my server are starting to sell 15 stamina gems. I have almost full tier5 and the only item I could justify buying a gem for was this gun.

IMHO, this is a good place to socket a +hit gem which will grant you the +3 STA socket bonus. Assuming you would otherwise gem with +12 sta, you are basically trading 90 hp for +8 hit, allowing you to up your threat generation and allowing your DPSers to open up that much more, at least at my stage of progression.

The +25 stamina I get from my “of stamina” throwing weapon has served me fine thus far… Sure this gun will provide +14 more stam (with a +12 stam gem) but that’s awful expensive for an extra 140 hp. Also, a throwing weapon is about twice as fast which makes pulls easier.
I’m sure I’ll get it eventually, but I’m not too concerned about 140 extra hp, and I definitely don’t think it’s a “must have”… especially for the more casual player.

@Grimgorr
While you have a small point in that your throwing weapon pulls faster. The reality is that an extra 14 stamina is a ton. It may seem like a lot of mats, but the fact is you are not going to replace it.

IT LOOKS COOL.

If you’ve been paying attention, 14 stamina might be the equivalent of around 600 effective health, depending on your armor.
All that armor makes every point of stam that much more powerful.

The point about “effective health” is a good one… one I overlooked. Thanks. .
My only point: This thing is a HUGE investment for the casual player, and maybe not worth it until you’re no longer a “casual” player… course I guess everyone has a different definition of what “casual” player is. For now, my throwing weapon will just have to do. I’m still trying to farm mats to make my Breastplate of Kings, unless my Panzar’Thar Breastplate drops first.
Hey Vene or Link… can I borrow some gold? :o)

Maybe Vene will post a nice list of easy daily’s for prot warriors, and the steps you need to take to make them all available.

This gun is friggin awesome and well worth the investment for any tank that is serious about tanking in endgame raids.

I am at the moment farming for just that gun - awesome one for sure. But I agree with Grimgorr on a aspect seldomly mentioned in tanks and range weapons - attack speed. I used to have a slow gun (3.0s) before but changed to a quicker thrown weapon just for the tricky pulls.
When you need to hit that Robot guards in Mecha when patrolling not to pull anyone else you really dont want 3 sec attack speed. My thrown weapon with 1.6s speed makes most pulls a lot easier.
If I manage to get the mats f

For instant long ranged pulls consider “The Decapitator” from Prince Melchazar in Karazhan.
40 yard range and instant cast

In regards to a daily quest guide for Prot Warriors, I’m tempted, but I won’t likely do it. The reason is that I want to keep this blog as focused on tanking as possible. A daily quest guide starts to diverge from that.
That being said:
1. Skettis Bombing Quest
2. Aether Wranglers
3. Emanations
Are the easy 3.
4. Blade’s Edge Bombing Quest
The 2nd bombing quest in Blade’s Edge is easy once you have a fast mount, but with a slow mount you’ll need to always stay very high then fly straight down at your targets to bomb them effectively. Even then you’ll run the risk of getting hit on occasion.
5. The Demon Portal Thing
This one gets unlocked once you’ve gained enough rep. It’s a pain to do on your own, but since someone is almost always doing it I suggest you just group up with anyone in the area.
Beyond that guys you need your Epic Mount which I won’t lie, takes forever and I probably was 70 for over 4 months before I got mine. I simply value better enchants and Solid Stars of Elune over flying faster and unlocking Netherwing daily quests.
Hope that helps guys, tank strong and prosper
(not financially, but mentally ya know.. in that feel good spot.)

I won’t argue but I do believe a “Keeping up with Repairs” post wouldn’t be very far off the mark. It fits in nicely with “3 Pillars of Tanking” and “How to Act With a New Guild”.
The guide in the comment above is a nice overview. Anyone having trouble keeping up with the repair costs of wipe-nights should definitely do the quests mentioned

Don’t forget the high dps on the engineering gun. You can use adamantite shells with them too! Sure the shells are expensive (5g per stack on my server), but that’s not much considering it takes a long time for a protty to use 200 bullets.
Link was dead on with the Decapitator though. I picked that up for a fury set and I use it a ton when tanking. It does ~500 dmg and I have been using it for months and the /use has never missed for me. The range is huge, it’s instant, and only a 5 minute cooldown. It can take the spot of a misdirection too. I use it often for Maulgar, Void Reaver, Gruul, Al’ar, Morogrim, Karathress, etc. You just can’t beat 500+ free threat to start a fight.

Agreed the Decapitator is a fantastic weapon and I really need to pick one up. I simply keep passing it to someone else because they feel that it’d be fun to have. I think its past time that I decide its mine.

uhm howbout the boomstick from heroic sethekk halls?
A decent alternative till the mats have been farmed ^^

The Boomstick
Binds when picked up
Ranged Gun
92 - 173 Damage Speed 2.00
(66.3 damage per second)
+21 Stamina
Durability 75 / 75
Requires Level 70
Equip: Increases defense rating by 13.

I’m currently using a Boomstick, but the need for some hit rating (socket hurrah) has made me decide to farm for the mats. I highly recommend the boomstick, especially if you’re finding yourself a bit light on def.
As for money, the 3 things I’d recommend are:
1. Daily Quests
2. Mining (I assume 90% of tanks are miners at this point for either engineering or blacksmithing) - Just either lap Nagrand or do passes up and down Blades Edge and you are bound to get a couple of stacks of ore.
3. Fishing/Cooking - I am not sure what it is like on your respective server, but I can easily make 60g+ per day on Crawdads and Fishsticks.

I am curious as to why the arena throwing weapons are not better than the Destroyer.. I understand the stam part of it but with the resi that comes from the throwing axe wouldnt it make it easier to hit the def cap and thus make it easier to perhaps use less def gear for more say avodiance gear?
[Reply]
January 2nd, 2008 at 5:27 pm
Well the reason would be that if you really wanted to go that route that you could simply socket the destroyer with a 10 Resilience Gem and get 30 Stamina total because of the set bonus which would still be better than the newest Gladiator weapon which is only 24 Stamina and 12 Resilience.
Resilience is nice to have for when you are in the Kara to as far as Tier 5 itemization range, but eventually it’s going to be completely wasted sinced you’ll easily have enough Defense/Resilience Rating on other piece and at that time the Destroyer will still be going on strong.
Now certainly if you want to get the Vengeful Gladiator’s War Edge for a nice threat set or pulling quick in 5 mans I’d agree that could be helpful, it definitely isn’t a bad weapon, but it’ll never have the longevity of the Destroyer.

“When you need to hit that Robot guards in Mecha when patrolling not to pull anyone else you really dont want 3 sec attack speed. My thrown weapon with 1.6s speed makes most pulls a lot easier. ”
Just for the record …
Weapon speed has no impact on pulling speed. The reason thrown weapons are better for pulls is that cast time for your “Thrown” skill is 0.5 seconds, while it is 1.5 seconds for your “Shoot”.
Your original point is still stands, but for pulling there is no practical difference between a gun with 2.5 speed and one with 3.8.
And the decapitator is imba. I use it when I OT to peel mobs off the MT after the pull.

This indeed a very nice gun,but even tho i already have it i i never stopped farming hero sethekk for Boomstick. It`s a nice gun if u need +def for some equip sets(i.e. had to use it for my NR set to tank hydross).I think it` definitely worth having it too.

If you’re concerned about the pulling speed with the gun on a warrior, just do what i do and equip your throwing weapon, pull, and then equip your gun right after (using itemrack or manually).

On the topic of ranged weapon speed for pulling:
If you do not understand your weapon & have the judgement required to pull, regardless of it’s speed, then you need to spend practice using your weapon.
A great way to do this (though really, is it required? hardly) would be using the mobs in Shadowmoon Valley. The guys in the bubbles? For that quest you probably never did? Yeah, those. One for each element.
You can simply shoot them over & over again as they never attack back. These are great for other purposes, too. Try it!

What about getting a green champion gun? I am currently using one with 23 stamina and 17 def rating and 11 str I think are the stats. no sockets and a little less stam but the def is pretty helpful for someone thats just starting out. Its nearly impossible to get into a normal 5man these days, I have done 3 in the past 2 weeks and that is trying nonstop to do them, nobody does them at all anymore. I watched the AH for the couple of weeks I was leveling and managed to pick up the gun for only 8g with the advice of a felow tank I trust. He told me it would be worth its weight in gold and players usualy overlook the value of them because they are simply greens.
