Getting the Gyro-Balanced Khorium Destroyer is also a -very- good reason to take up Engineering. As mentioned in a previous article the Destroyer is the #1 Ranged weapon any dedicated tank is going to want. Taking Engineering is a great way to offset the cost of the Primal Nether and the pain of trying to find someone to make it if you’re not in a large raiding guild. Engineering kills two birds with one stone, better option that BS IMO.

One thing to note is you only need 350 engineering to make and wear the goggles. That’s pretty nice because Engineering doesn’t really get uber expensive until 350+. The goggles aren’t too expensive to make either and I consider them to be a sidegrade to T5 helm.

My warrior is an engineer/miner. I am currently in the process of mining a ton of mats to power level blacksmithing in the place of mining. It will be costly but I will be able to craft myself the Red Havoc Boots, BP of Kings, and various other patterns going forward. I hate mining on my warrior anyway slowbike+prot spec=no fun!

    Good Catch! Post updated.

Also, I agree eventually it is best to switch to Blacksmithing + Engineering if you can afford it. Myself I spent way too much gold on Blacksmithing to ever drop it and I’m not in a position to trade Mining for Engineering yet.

Isn’t the 1h sword(t3) on blacksmithing best of the best till Unbreakable will ?

    [item]Mallet of the Tides[/item] vs [item]Blazefury[/item]

The buff to the Mallet makes it a tough call. The Engineering helm, however, is better than t5. Ideally, you just take both, its just insanely expensive.

Engineering is not that expensive to level up to 350. The only annoying thing is a lot of stuff requires blasting powder which requires a mote of earth and a mote of fire after 300 skill, so you’ll have to shatter your primals now or worry about getting someone else to do it later.

Blazefury is nice but I see the BP of Kings being a one of a kind type item like the engy helm. So I’m going to go armorsmith and replace my Chestplate of A’dal with the BP of kings!

I am definitely dreading leveling engineering and blacksmithing in WotLK though without a gathering profession:(

Also note that the “Reload Goblin Mortar” recipe has yet to be fixed, and although it turns gray in the 225-250 area, it will get you to 375, at 1 point per 3 reloads.

The mats required to reload a goblin mortar are very cheap. I believe it’s iron ore and some other cheap material.

If you aren’t a goblin engineer, no big deal, just go read the book in the hut at steamwheedle and become one temporarily :)

According to wowhead, the “The Mortar: Reloaded” no longer provides skillups. i don’t know if that’s true or not, but that’s what the comments there say.

Yes, Mike, nice catch, this would indeed appear to be the case base on what was posted there on 8-28. Funny how they hot fix something in the game since release :)

Sorry guys! I’d delete my misinformation if I could >.

    Argh!
You have told me about a new road to take with crafting skills. I got BS+mining but I could very possibly switch mining for engineering… Especially since my alt has 335 in mining so farming mats would be easy.

A very good tip - and as a trade skill junky I need to go down that road =)

Another good note about Engineering is the ability to make the Gyro-balance Khorium Destroyer yourself. Probably wont save a lot in the end, but the costs on the Primal Nether is more than enough, especially once you take the tanking goggles into account.

If you have tier4 helm I’m not sure I would level engineering from scratch just for this helmet. The gun can be used without engineering. Maybe wait until they announce all the other cool engineering stuff they have planned in 2.3?

  13. Kyrillian Says:

The engineering helm is worlds above the T4 Helm. I would put it slightly above T5 as well.

If you go Goblin, which I would recommend, you also get the goblin rocket launcher which is 45 stam I believe but also provides a nice /use of a rocket that does around 500 dmg and stuns a target. It’s great for pulling, although it’s a shorter range than Decapitator. The Goblin bombs are also nice especially if you’re AOE tanking something.

Gnomish has more useful transporters (Toshley’s/Gadget vs. Everlook/Netherstorm) and has a trinket that is 45 stam and the /use is to turn a mob or player into a chicken (more funny than effective).

As of now it appears engineers are getting a crafted Epic and non-epic flying mount and a new repair bot schematic in 2.3. The new repair bot is supposed to sell reagents and limited other items like health potions.

WTB Rep based patterns and instance drops for engineering! Every crafting profession gets a couple drops in SSC/TK and BT/Hyjal, except engineering.

I consider the tier4 helm better than the tier5 helm. I prefer shield block to most other forms of mitigation. I have a healthy 700+ base block going right now :)

  15. Kyrillian Says:

Block Value is awesome. I have the 2 piece T5 bonus and I’m almost certain it adds to your block value on shield slams not just shield blocks. When you click shield block you get a buff (I think it’s called Reinforced Shield) that says 100 block value. You keep the buff until one hit is blocked, but if you shield block and shield slam very quickly I notice larger shield slam dmg.
I still use my Styleen’s on bosses we have on farm. I switch it out for moroes trinket on new content though so I can have another holy $#!@ button:)

The 2 piece set bonus of t5 does add to your Shield Slam damage.

Engineering 1-350 AND mats for the tankatronic costed me a combined 1-1.2K gold, which is not that much. After that I farmed the khorium scope schema and leveled my skill to 375 almost free (buying mats and selling the scope is usually a zero sum transaction :)).

and i chose engineering on my warrior soley on the fact i’m an engineer in real life. I now get goods that help me with tanking which are the tankatronic goggles and the gyro balanced khorium destroyer. The luck! lol

I went engineering and blacksmithing. I was blacksmithing and mining, but I have an alt that can do the mining for me, freeing me up to do the engineering. I did it for the goggles, mostly, and the gun was a nice bonus.

I went blacksmithing for the swords and the bop schematics from endgame instances. I’m happily sporting a Blazefury now, as well as the Red Havoc Boots (schem dropped from trash in TK), GBKD, and Tankatronic Goggles. It was entirely worth it to me. I highly recommend going both if you can manage it. When we downed lurker the first time, it allowed me to pass the mallet on to our warrior OT… because I knew I was just one vortex away from my “t3″ BS sword.
