“My threat is fine”
You didn’t offend me, because I know this is a true overstatement that most tanks make.
LOL
Which is why I hate armorying people and seeing 25% dodge and 20% parry and like 20 hit rating and less than 10 expertise. And these are people at T5 or T6 content, who also have not picked up half of the 2.3+ badge gear.
I use your threat build, I have 108 hit rating, 33 expertise, executioner and a 1.5 92.0 dps weapon (the sword from MgT off Kael in heroic). I always pump out a ridiculous amount of threat but there is still a rogue in our guild who has high end gear and is specced properly and can pull off me in some circumstances if he goes all out.
“Your threat is not fine”

Talking of spell reflect. I’m convinced that every mage has a mod that tells them whenever I spell reflect because that’s the only time they ever use counterspell.

i had my first taste of spell reflect in regular and heroic BM. that was fun reflecting the casting portal elite. After that i was using it against applicable caster mobs whenever i can. Even the ones in kara.
Btw in MgT, the rogue can sap, then also quickly dispose of that imp. then spell reflect the rest or as much as youcan. other than that it is chaos in there.

If you pop spell reflect at right time you can reflect all three spells. Imp’s fire bolt, mages frost bolt and warlocks fire thing. Spell reflect can reflect multiply spells.
P.S. I’m still waiting for you to answer my question I posted via this little question box on the site like two weeks ago =(

If you pop spell reflect at right time you can reflect all three spells. Imp’s fire bolt, mages frost bolt and warlocks fire thing. Spell reflect can reflect multiply spells.
If you’re a tauren warrior, it often pays off to use war stomp. Afterwards all the casters will start casting at the same time thus you can reflect all of them
@Mefis and David
I don’t speak native English either, but the podcast is really easy to understand in my opinion. And obviously you don’t need to listen

Just because someone’s armoury has low threat stats doesn’t mean they don’t have threat pieces to swap in. My low threat set would look pretty silly if I logged out in it, but that doesn’t mean I use it to tank anything threat sensitive.
What’s wrong with mgt? It’s a fun zone! I think it’s a nice change from tanking primarily melee mobs. A different kind of challenge.
Of course the Priestess was nice enough to cough her trinkets up quickly. She doesn’t like Venny as much.
=P
The regular pulls are tricky, but it’s those massive worm packs before the second boss that are tough on a warrior tank with trigger happy AOE. (causing the healer to pull healing agro trying to keep the mage alive…)
Pick up the Sporegar rep shield, put on a big fat shield spike, and tell your healer to let the mage die if he starts too early. Although a really good mage abusing his cooldowns properly can handle the worms solo.

@Kavtor: I should have been more specific. When I see people still wearing maiden’s choker instead of the brooch or wearing the t4 gloves instead of the badge gloves, or other things that just make you wonder “has no one told you about the new badge gear sine 2.3?”
However, there is a limit. And vene is going to hate my saying this, considering I spec and gear for TPS:
2% threat to gloves is a joke. If 2% threat is the only thing keeping you above your dps in threat, your dps is holding back anyways so 2% is irrelevant. So I’m doing 1500 tps now I’m doing 1530? As if you’d EVER notice the difference.
I’ll take 10 stamina, thanks.

Mgt is not my idea of a fun instance, either. Getting constantly stunned and seduced is insanely frustrating, not to mention the AE spams…ugh. I’m not crazy about a place that essentially requires such a large reliance on cc, which seem to really limit your party makeup more than usual. It almost seems like Blizz’s attempt at original and new things just ended up as more annoying things.

What is the best way for a Prot warrior to multi Mob tank like 4 or 5 mobs in heroic magisters terrace; and keep aggro on them without the dps pulling the mobs off you? — especially the first mob pulls before first boss.

@Hydrix
I wear the maiden neck over the broach on some fights. Shade of Akama Defenders, or Mother Shaz if I’m not worried about shadow resist. If parry and threat aren’t a big deal, I can stack dodge happily. And lets face it. Some people don’t have the play time to do heroics, outside of their regularily schedualed guild stuff. Sometimes people are genuinely not gearing optimally. Some times there are reasonable reasons for it though.
And not to pick on you, but I’ve got 2% threat on my TPS gloves. If you’re going to stack stats, stack them. My avoidance / effective health gloves have an armour enchant. 2% is a pretty solid boost. I can’t think of another enchant (other than a weapon enchant) that’s going to give you any where near that big of a threat boost. There are a lot of armour slots where you’d have a tough time getting a 2% threat boost.

Why am I exalted and don’t have all the badge items?
Because I don’t need 4 other players who know what they are doing to help farm rep items. Seems I can’t get anyone in my guild to get off thier backsides to do anything but weekly raids. Heroic pugs are the only thing worse than pugs, trust me, I know. I’ve been in waaaay too many of them.
Thanks for the podcast and all the other great content.

I don’t know if it has been mentioned or not, but you can spell-reflect multiple spells at once, so long as they are in a quick succession of one-other. I do this in Magister Terrace and to the Nercomancers in Hyjal trash all the time. If you can time is properly you can get some pretty nice AoE threat….
(Though on Hyjal trash is almost gets me killed most of the time!)

“..wearing dps gear and a 2 hander to tank. Because dual wielding is better than a 2 hander, folks.”
So true, so true. I can’t tell you how much fun I have going DW devastate spam while questing. The first couple are kind of disappointing, but the 4th one and higher hit for about 75% as much as my Bloodthirst was hitting for when I was fury. And it’s a lot less rage and a much shorter cooldown.
I’ve often wondered about DW tanking something. Maybe once I get geared enough for Kara I could DW tank Ramparts or something.

The group i do heroic MgT with daily works fairly well. (although after about 15 runs i still dont have the trinket)
I usually have a rogue and mage for cc, and a resto shammy to heal. As for the 3rd dps spot we usually take anything we can get, but hunter, warlock or mage is prefered.

“You would have all your badge items if you had just farmed Heroics instead of Scryers.”
I get where you’re coming from, but be reasonable. This is just patently untrue. The Aldor/Scryers Rep. grind can be done in two weeks if you grind regularly and efficiently.
Getting the hundreds of badges necessary for every Badge item is literally MONTHS of work especially if you’re talking about Heroics only. I mean, at an average of 10 Heroics per week which is probably more than most people do, especially consistently, you’re still at over 3 months of grinding to get the 500+ needed to get all the badge gear (and that’s not counting any primals or resist gear).
Once again I think you’re speaking from your own perspective, not realizing that 75%+ of your badges are probably coming from Karazhan, ZA, etc. and not from “grinding Heroics.” Outside of the Daily, Heroics are actually not an efficient way to get the badge gear. You need to get one or two essential items, but you need to get into Karazhan and beyond if you really want a chance to “get all the badge gear.”
…and in the meantime, getting Exalted with Scryers/Aldor is literally trivial.

Tankette reply on May 19, 2008 9:45 am:
Took me like 2 days to get exalted with Aldor. I just farmed gold and bought marks and fel armaments.
I have only had 1 successful heroics run and 3 disasters. But, I am raiding almost every night of the week so the badges are rolling in. So far raids have given me 176 badges and heroics 6.
At some point I want to do Heroic Mech on a daily basis for the 4 badges. Mech was the one successful heroic I mentioned above and it took about an hour. 1 hour for 4 badges (6 if it is the daily like when i did it) seems like a good daily routine.

You guys take what Vene says too literally. He’s not telling you if you’re a Scryer to stop grinding your rep, and do nothing but heroics. He’s just pointing out that you may need to prioritize your upgrades. This also includes his Badge of Justice pick order. The podcast, the badge pick order, and the site as a whole are nothing but a reference. What we need to do individually is look at our gear and decide where our biggest upgrade is, and what it is. And this website can be a helpful guide in figuring out what that is. Not the be-all end-all doctrine of the tanking universe…
I’d continue, but my pizza just arrived.
[Reply]
April 18th, 2008 at 9:34 am
I’d just like to say that I agree that “grinding” scryers rep is on the whole not worth it. Me? I just bought 50% of the stuff I needed, and got the rest in about 4hrs of farming.
It helped that I did all the quests while leveling up, and made it a point to farm my cloth for bandages from blood elves whenever possible.
And now, with the 2.4 island, exalted Scryers is EASY EASY. If you’re not exalted with scryers after a month of 2.4 dailies, I’m wondering if you’re selling your signets/tomes on the AH instead of turning them in for an awesome shoulder enchant.
[Reply]
April 18th, 2008 at 9:43 am
I don’t think this whole badge pick order can be settled until we know exactly what kind of pizza is on the table.
[Reply]
April 18th, 2008 at 10:49 am
I was amazed when I sat down one to figure out what it would take to get my scryer rep to exalted. I had to buy quite a few of the items just to hit revered. At least the new dailies give me some other motivation to kill blood elves besides just hoping for signets and tomes. That’s pretty much the worst grind ever.

They’re quite a number of quests that you can complete to gain faction too. You needn’t just purchase rep or mindless grind mobs. It’s hardly “the worst grind ever.”

I’ve done every one of those quests save the last 2 big group ones, which would give me another 2000 rep or so. It’s still a terrible grind with little to reward you while you do it.
[Reply]
April 18th, 2008 at 12:35 pm

Silly Scryers. Aldor was easy! Armaments are much cheaper than Tombs.
[Reply]
April 18th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
I’ve noticed an increase in the selling price for tomes and armaments, which is nice since I bought rep up to exalted before 2.4 for the shoulder enchant, (as well as the revered chest before it).
Badge items are clearly the true grind, especially since I’m trying to gear for tanking AND dps. It’s easy to get into heroics as a prot warrior, but my guild is tank heavy so most of the time I need to respec for 25 - mans. I’m not sure where to spend my badges - the new 2.4 tanking gear, or those few vital dps pieces I still need (furious deathgrips).
@Khrushchev
Talk of DW tanking interests me, as I might be able to blur that gap between dps and tanking. I’ve tried a fury-prot build with a shield once before, but lost too much rage efficiency. I suppose to really run a setup like that, you could focus your gear on dodge + parry, or spec into arms for mace spec. With luck, the proc can keep up your rage.

Great listen! I was responding to this yesterday when my browser bonked out, so hopefully I haven’t made a mistaken in the meanwhile on this point:
Coilfang Sirens in Steamvaults do make the 4-packs tougher, but only if you attempt to tank them. Their fear is not natural, it can only occur if players are in melee range of them. Since they’re ranged, they won’t move into melee range on their own unless a) they’re silenced or b) they run out of mana.
Since spell damage reduction isn’t particularly high for tanks, I’ve found Steamvaults can be sped through so long as your ranged tank and kill the Sirens first. The bonus is that it gives you time to get more solid group aggro before the DPSers lay in.
Great podcast Veneretio. Keep it up!

One tip for Heroic Ramparts:
You can spellreflect most “burning ground” boss stuff, INCLUDING the blaze from the Dragon. so, as soon as you grabbed the dragon, hit spellreflect! as soon as he fire breathes, he will leave a burning spot right there on the ground. If you have spellreflect up, you will only eat the cone fire breath, but not the fire damage from the burning spot. move aside one step, let spellreflect cooldown + 1 or 2 secs, put it up again, and you’re ready for the next fire breath.

Meh, Kara is easier than heroics anyway. :3
All the tanking gear in 2.3 did not cost 500 badges.
The neck, bracers, gloves, belt, pants, boots = 350. The new 2.4 gear is mostly sidegrades depending on what you’ve gotten of the 2.3 gear and ZA. I have the chest from ZJ and all the 2.3 gear so really the only things I plan on spending badges are are the new belt, ring, and Sapphires.
That’s again only about 350 badges. There are months between patches, that’s plenty of time to get so many…Kara/ZA or no.
If your guild can’t at least clear most of Kara you’re probably not ready for most heroics anyway. :/ Kara is easier than most heroics IMO, especially Mr. T.
Vene is my hero. It is indeed nice to put the voice to the words. ^_^

cant agree more on your articles, and there is always an extra info that I can use in my now 3years of tank exp.
Was thinking that I actually should name my main gears for:
Aggro and Avoidance Gear
b4 my aggro gear was named normal or block - and avoidance I named Boss gear, but just is a more clear syntax to call them aggro and avoidance.
And imo Tanks in general should be aware and distinct these 2 main Tanking Equipments.

Thanks for the shadowpriest- to-party nod, Vene. They are quite helpful in heroic MgT with both kinds of MC. (On a MC pull, the rest of the party must do NOTHING until the MC’d mob is dead dead dead, then have the spriest fade and begin a normal pull), and in that last horrible resetting pull just before the final boss (a post-pull MC…after the pull, have the spriest dot the primary target, then MC the Smuggler…smugglers do insane amounts of melee damage and you will essentially have another tank). Joy!
Great site…thanks for the encouragement.
