Gearing yourself so you can Gear yourself
The title is a little perplexing, but here’s what it amounts to…
Get Four 20-slot Bags
These are pricey, but they’ll pay for themselves over time due to you not having to throw away as much grey stuff that you could have vendored. Furthermore, you’ll actually be able to carry around a threat set, a survivability set, a resistance sets, potions, flasks, elixirs, your mount, a fishing rod, Egbert, etc
But… But… 18-slot Bags are good enough!
No.
That’s 8 spots you don’t have.
Okay, I’m sold… where do I get them?
1. Magtheridon: Pit Lord’s Satchel
Consider enlightening your guild as to your plight of having to hall around soooo much gear and being unable to farm the gold for bags as a lowly protection warrior. Some guilds buy this, some don’t.
2. Tailor-made: Primal Mooncloth Bag
The standard 20-slot bag made by tailors. The mats are as follows:
8x Primal Mooncloth
4x Netherweb Spider Silk
Save yourself some money and farm the mats. The Spider Silk drops from the Spiders South East of Shattrah City and if you can find a lazy (or generous) Primal Mooncloth tailor, you might be able to steal their cooldown by providing them with a Primal Life and a Primal Water. (that’ll net you 2 Primal Mooncloth each time)
3. Magister’s Terrace: Sun Touched Satchel
Drops in both the regular and heroic versions of Magister’s Terrace off any mob or any boss. Basically just keep running one or the other until you’ve got one. (It’s unique)
4. Zul’Aman Quest Reward: Tattered Hexcloth Sack
Even if your guild doesn’t do Zul’Aman, you can pay another guild for their instances (as long as they’ve killed the first 4 bosses) and simply walk through and get this quest reward at your leisure. Your best bet is to ask a guild once they’ve just completed killing all 6 bosses and more often than not even if you offer payment, they’ll simply hand the instance over to you for free.
In the end between the Magister’s Terrace and Zul’Aman bags combined with assembling yourself or buying 2 more Primal Mooncloth bags, it’s really not that hard and/or expensive to get four 20-slot bags. I assure you, you’ll be thanking yourself time and time again for having the maximum amount of bag space.

Everytime I get a guildmate who says s/he doesn’t have 4 20 slotters, I tell them I wish I could reach through their monitor and slap them. Harsh but the whiner usually complains about bag space and is still using 16 slotters.

If you raid consistently, and you don’t have alot of 20 Slotters, you are not coming prepared. I am a rogue, yet I still need every slot.

Since warlocks can now summon in 25 man raids if found i don’t need to carry other sets off gear around with me, however i totally agree that 20 slots bags are awesome and everyone shud make an effort to get them.
I agree ivanstone, no one shud be using 16 slots, well maybe for bank slots.

I have the 4 20-slotters, but I seem to find that the amount of gear I carry expands to fill the available space I have, so I still have the same amount of space available.
From memory, I carry around:
- Threat set
- Avoidance set
- DPS set
- Shadow Res set (Mother Shahraz)
- Frost Res set (Hydross)
- Fire res set (infernal tanking on Anetheron)
- 40 healing potion injectors
- 40 Charged Crystal Focuses
- Stack of Elixir of Major Fortitude
- Stack of Elixir of Mastery
- 2x Stack of Flask of Fortification
- 2x Stack of Spicy Crawdad (or Fisherman’s Feast)
- Engineering tools, fishing rod, lures etc
- 2xEngineering Transporters (tanking in raids with the shapechange debuff is fun!)
Even though there’s still some overlap between sets, it’s a lot to carry, and the convenience of not having to remember to pull sets out of the bank for each fight is worth a lot.
Still want more bag space, though…!

Aughban reply on May 28, 2008 4:50 am:
why would you carry around a shadow, frost and fire resistance set all at once? shadow and fire okay on a BT run. Its not even like you need to remember anymore, it take litterally 2 mins to get a portal to shatt, pick the gear out of a neatly organised bank and then get summoned back, in that time healing nad tanking targets have been assigned and you have not lost any time.
[Reply]
Namthe reply on May 28, 2008 6:19 am:
Yeah, I could do that, but I prefer to be organised up front and have everything I could possibly need. I’ll grant that I can leave some of it in the bank sometimes, but my bank is often full of crafting gear or other stuff.
Also, I don’t know about anyone else, but I’d take a dim view of someone wanting to be ported back to get gearsets every other boss. Yes, targets and so on can be marked in your absence, but why bother? Showing a good example and having all you need is far better than saving that odd bit of bag space, IMO. And the tank, as one of the most visible raid members, should be setting a good example for everyone else to follow.
[Reply]
Aughban reply on May 28, 2008 8:15 am:
tbh the way to set a good example is to come to a raid with a sound understanding off class and tactics not whether or not you filled your bags to the brim with gear/consumables.
Imo its overkill but its doesn’t mean its not good. I do take double the amount of flasks i’ll need and at least a stack of 3-4 different potion/elixers.
But i only have 1 20 slot bag and 3 18 slot bags and i nearly always have 2 bags empty when i attend a raid.
Namthe reply on May 28, 2008 9:01 am:
Oh, absolutely. I just see porting back to get gear as a thin edge of a wedge I’d rather not drive. What if one of your mages decides he wants to keep getting ported back to get more arcane powder (for example)?
I realise that consumables are very much a different thing, but if I can carry all my gear about (and have no reason not to) then I don’t see why it would be bad. I still have 6-8 bag slots free most of the time, and this was really my initial point, laboured though it is. As I got bigger bags all that happens is I carry more gear with me rather than leave it behind.
Vilhelmriker reply on July 2, 2008 6:55 am:
ok, I gotta snicker at this.
now, granted, I don’t have a threat set, and an avoidance set. I have two main sets: a Tanking set (which I’m always wearing, a little avoidance heavy, with a threat weapon), and a DPS set. I have BOTH of my Hydross resistance sets in the bank, and I haven’t had the luxury of starting my SR set yet.
as for consumables:
2 stacks of SSC pots
2 stacks of TK pots
at the most, 2 healing pot injectors (40 pots)
ONE stack of flasks
at the most, one stack of Shattrath Flasks
food as needed.
regular elixirs when I can.
it’s cool that you carry your gear on you at all times, but… dude, you sounsd like you’re gonna raid for 72 hours STRAIGHT.
I know where I’m going on a particular night, and I pack accordingly. I’m often left with about 10-12 open slots for whatever greys and greens and new loots show up that I can claim for my own.
I have an advantage, that my tank’s a herb/miner, so I don’t have to worry about any crafting mats, I admit…
but rethink your theory a little…. you might make things easier if you take 5 minutes before your raid and say “ok, I need this, this, and this tonight.” unless your guild raids ALL OVER on any given night… you know you aren’t tanking all those bosses in one night.
my best advice? invest in a bank toon… you’d be surprised how easy it makes it on you. and the copper you spend mailing stuff back and forth is worth the hassle and space you have.
May 28th, 2008 at 6:13 am
I agree that keeping resistance sets is kinda waste of bag space. Even if you think you won’t have time before the raid to visit bank you can prepare day before… if you know you will be stuck at school or work that day.
But, if you like it… don’t forget arcane set for MgT and nature for SL and SP
Hehe.
I planed to invest in 20 slots few times already but I dropped the idea every time. To me it isn’t worth it. If spend most of my time on my alts. If I really need bit more space for something special i just mail all non-soulbound items like food, tools, pots, etc. to my bank alt.
In my opinion expansion is to close for 20 bags to pay of. If you got them in the first few months of TBC I guess by now they payed off. But it is really hard to earn 1500g (how much 4 bags cost on my server) in grays.
Not to mention that in Outland you can always get to vendor in few seconds if you have fast bird and almost all instances have vendors in front or in them.

“spend most of my time on my alts”.
What do you think the best way of making 20 slot bags is? I alt a fair bit myself and I have 3 Tailors. Two of them are PMC spec currently and I churn out 5 PMC every 4 days. I have one transmute spec alchemist as well. So largely I’m making 20 slot bags out of whatever cloth I randomly come across and Primal Earth. I just have to farm the silk. Even if I was to buy the silk I’m still making bags for less then 100g.
There’s no point in skimping on trade professions. Most are fairly easy to level to around 360-365.

The main point of the post was you can get three “free” 20 slot bags if you really want to. That simply shaves off at least half and up to 3/4 of the 1500g to acquire the four 20 slot bags.

Yes. I do have ZA one =)
If I run MgT to get bag I invest time and save money for one bag. If I do it only for the bag I still lose because I cold have spent that time on pure farming and earn more.
Same goes for alts. It isn’t free to me. I see it as waste since I know I would earn more with gathering skills (not because these are more profitable but because I can’t be bothered to follow the economy and craft items people really need or spam trade selling crafted stuff). And farming mats myself I also see as lost because I spent as much as those would sell for. :p
I have about 20 free bag slots. And that is enough for now. If I go to raid and I need to take my resistance set I’ll have only 4-5 free slots but that isn’t a problem since there isn’t much to loot in raids anyway.
But, anyway, 20 slot bags are great. I did run out of room many times and I did destroy few items now and then but not enough to invest in 20 slots.

I really should get around to making another couple 20 slotters. Usually it isn’t a big deal, but when someone wants 40 mana pots made when I’ve got Illidan and RoS gear on me it starts to get tight.
I don’t want to put my [item]Onyxia Hide Backpack[/item] in the bank though

if you are honestly using full 18 slotters and have no space left, you are carrying too much. i guess theres nothing wrong with being prepared, but its just not necessary to burden yourself with 8 sets of gear and consumables you will not be able to consume in one raiding session (ie, the guy above who said he has 2 stacks of fortification flasks, overkill for any raid you might be running).
moral of the story? 20 slotters help a great deal, and if youre like me and respec multiple times in a week (prot/fury for raiding, ms for pvp), youll find yourself lugging around those multiple gear sets. but, its more a matter of being smart about what you need and when you need it, and not feeling like you have to have everything in your bags at all times, then cursing yourself because you dont have enough bag space to pick up valuable vendor trash.
and an afterthought, i think bliz should make a bag available solely for armor, even moreso for the hybrid classes (pallies/druids/shaman), and because nearly everyone has separate pvp and pve gear sets. when i played my druid, i had feral dps, feral tanking, healing, boomkin, and pvp gear, most of which i carried at all times because even questing, you never know what you might need. an armor bag with 28 slots would be a huge boon to lots of people, and i dont really think it would be bad to implement.

I’m glad I have a 70 mage i can get tailoring stuff done with. That being said, i initially started her off with shadoweave so respeccing to mooncloth would kill me gold-wise (i like frost spec.. so sue me. :O) . That in addition to her being 365 tailoring poses a bit of a problem getting 20slotters. I do have the 20 slot ZA one on both and could get mats for the 3 other mooncloth bags.
In terms of space, i’ll explain it this way… When I raid, i usually carry essentials.
1.) Gear sets.
2.) Pots/scrolls
3.) buff Food
4.) Sharpening/weight stones (or reagents and wizard oils for the mage)
Anything else gets put into the bank for later. Gemming, enchanting, and the like should be done beforehand which leads into coming into a raid prepared…

Most of your advice is spot-on Vene, but this? Meh.
“That’s 8 spots you don’t have.” So what?
I don’t just randomly go fishing while I’m wandering around. I go and do it for 2 hours a week and stock up. I don’t randomly tank bosses that require resistance sets, I know ahead of time when I’m going to need these, etc.
It might not be the most efficient or convenient method to keep things in your bank, but suggesting that four 20-slot bags are somehow “essential” to being a successful tank is a tiny bit of a stretch I think.
[Reply]
Veneretio reply on May 29, 2008 8:25 pm:
It certainly isn’t essential, but being prepared for a raid is and the more you can carry the less you have to worry about forgetting.
That being said, the purpose of this post was more just to show how easy it actually is to get four 20-slot bags and act as a reference page.
I think we all have that particular number of bag slots we require open to function. For some of us that number is 3 or 4 for others… it’s 16 or more. Regardless, the more options you have along with you, the better. You never know when a boss will die and you’ll find yourself staring at a boss you never expected to get to.
Perhaps this post was a bit of a stretch, but maybe that all lies in what you do with it? Some took this time to reflect on how often their lack of bag space has limited them. Others realized how much better their gaming experience has been having the maximum number of bag slots and even then still mentioned they wished they could have more. Yet, some like yourself questioned it’s relevance and you have a point too. Noted

I find myself carrying way too much stuff. I have 20-slotters, but only 10 free bag slots. Don’t you guys feel the need to carry around every possibly needed piece? Like for trinkets, I carry 2 stam trinkets, moroes, aqir, shard, autoblocker, and 2 DPS trinkets. That’s 8 trinkets!!
[Reply]
May 30th, 2008 at 9:35 am
This is a great reference for getting 3 of 4 free 20 slotters, and there’s no real reason not to have them! Funny, I just posted about this actually on my blog. Here’s the short version:
Having no bag space isn’t just a frustration to you, it’s a frustration to your whole team, and it hinders your chances of success. If you’re spending time searching for a consumable, or a peice of gear or anything really at all, you’re slowing the whole team and reducing the amount of bosses that can be killed or progression attempts that can be made.
As a main tank everything and everyone is dependant on you, people will take thier cues from you and if you’re disorganized they will be too.
IMO, go to your bank before every raid and take only what you need for that instance. That way you can carry every peice of gear you need for that instance (even if it’s for a boss that you haven’t gotten to yet) and not have to sift thru junk you dont need.

Got a ton of crafting mats, food and non-soulbound items? Easy solution.
Just create an alt guild bank. For the price of a guild charter and the signatures of 10 players, you can create a guild. You can then create a guild bank. Buy one tab. Total costs approximately 100gold and 10 silver (plus what ever you have to do to get folks to sign your charter). You now have 98 slots. Now the second tab gets a little pricey (250gold), but you get the idea.

I 100% believe in this post’s message for new tanks out there.
As everybody’s good friend Wanderlei said “No tank who is doing everything they can to help their guild succeed uses just one set of armor to tank everything.”
This has really been my mantra for handling various situations, and as a result I carry somewhere between 30-35 different pieces of gear with me at all times, including a full set of dps gear. When I heard about the new 22 slot bags, I literally went out and farmed 9600 gold to buy bags for my endless amounts of resist sets, useful threat items, and other fun things I use for basically one encounter a week.
Get Bigger Bags. Quit spending your money on poprocks and bubblegum!
