Why I chose a Warrior

…and the clouds parted letting the light shine through like an omen from the lord himself radiating upon his shield and the lord spoke, “Thou shall Tank” and he tanked and it was good.

err… no, it wasn’t quite like that. Nope, not really at all.

The Selection Process

I remember watching hunters in action to dabbling with shadow priests to any number of other different classes until I stumbled upon my Warrior.

So, you always wanted to tank… right?

Uh… nope.

I didn’t even know what tanking was. All I knew was Warriors stood in melee range frantically swinging. When I first rolled a Warrior I was no more determined to play a Warrior than any other class, I was testing it out. I hadn’t read anything about Warriors at all. In fact, I’m fairly certain I didn’t even read the brief rundown that Blizzard provides for you in the character selection screen.

What did it for Me

Charge.

I still remember the feeling of the first time I hit that Charge button and went racing towards a mob. That love affair meant I instantly enjoyed intercept upon learning it as well and was just as pleased to find Intervene to be among the new abilities for Warriors in TBC. I liked going fast that’s really all there was to it.

Why does this Matter?

It doesn’t really. That’s the point. It doesn’t matter what reason you chose to pick a Warrior or really even what reason you chose to be a Tank. In either case, you have just as much of an opportunity to learn everything about the class as the next guy. You have just as much an opportunity to prove yourself as the next guy.

So if you’re sitting on the fence out there as a DPS warrior or with a 70 alt warrior gathering dust, give tanking a try… a real honest try. Educate yourself on the class and don’t rush the process of getting run through everything and getting handed full epic gear. Savor it. Earn the 5 mans. Earn the 10 mans. Earn the 25 mans.

It’s worth it especially if you wanna go fast :)

That’s a very deep post, and it is 100% true. I first toon was a priest. Then i went with a warrior so i can smack some shit, and i grew to love it.

Well said. Just as they say that the defining ability of the Rogue is stealth, I think the defining ability of the Warrior is charge. I rolled a warrior because I am a melee oriented player. I have a Shaman for my caster toon (Shaman, so that I can respec melee when I feel like it). Other than that, I’ve always played a warrior or rogue. I play my warrior for tank and the rogue for spank. Well… I also have the obligatory hunter but he’s more of just a farmer. Mostly retired at this point, too.

Heh, Vene, great minds must think alike, because when I posted my warrior level guide, I sang the song of praise for Charge, still the most awesome skill ever for me.

As for why I ended up as tank? My first character was a nightelf hunter. You may laugh now. I ended up bored at 30. Then I played a troll shaman. But I was tired of soloing, I knew that warriors had this strange ability of tanking in instances, and I wanted to stop soloing. And I got hooked.

I can’t sing the praises of tanking often enough, everyone should give it a try because it really is more awesome than it seems.

The standard response I generally give is that I rolled a tank because my guild needed tanks and I figured warriors were a good choice.

To take it a bit deeper though, the reason I specifically chose warrior and the reason I was so keen to roll a tank when the need arose (I wasn’t asked to) was a tank I knew back when I was a total noob raiding at level 60. Literally this guy was so fantastic, both as a tank and a person that I thought, ‘I wanna be like him.’

Krushchev hit the nail on the head. At least for me, anyway. Melee oriented, and proud of it! My first toon was my Warrior, and only cuz a couple friends told me to, heh. So I listened, and after a while, Intercept truly was my best friend. Then a few guildies asked me to tank when I hit level 50…said it would be great practice in case I was to raid someday. Boy were they right. One of them even started me off right…gave me 3 pieces of the Dungeon 1 set…I ended up getting 6/8. Not too bad…and then I had to get ready for BC, so I PvP’d for a couple weeks and got the Grand Marshall’s Aegis, which was a sweet shield at the time.

Now it seems, almost by chance rather than choice, that I’m just addicted to melee. I have the tank, a Feral druid who rips Rogues apart on the damage meters (I’ve pushed more than a few people to really work on their gear for their rogues to try and surpass me in raids), an Enhancement Shaman, a Ret Paladin (going Holy at 70…figured I’d try things out from the other end of the spectrum eventually) and now a Hunter that I just can’t stop playing. I don’t hate casters…I guess I’m just not attracted by the whole stopping to drink thing all the time. To each his own.

Hehe, I never thought of charge as a defining ability of warriors but I see your point. I’d have guessed maybe WW. That ability really impressed me when I saw a warrior do it for the first time.

I’ve played a mage for years, and if you count from the release of Diablo 1 that’s quite a few years. So by the time I’d levelled my WoW mage I didn’t have much respect for melee classes. Melee? There are the guys who stand in front of the mob trying to slash it with swords. Fools! Well, anyway…

Shortly into BC I went to Gruul’s lair with my mage on a progression raid with raid group I’d recently joined. I’d heard that it’s possible to “tank” one of the bosses and so had gathered a bunch of “…of stamina” gear. The leader (another mage) wasn’t on so they let me do it and of course I was *terrified*. But it worked, and I was kind of hooked. I gained a lot of respect for the MT’s job that day (he gave me a flask too, bless him!).

Warrior for life. No question. I’ve played every other class in the game…most to 70…nothing even comes close to how I feel about my warriors.

As far as tanking goes…even though warrior might be the most difficult class to tank with, if you do it well, its the most fun…and the most stylish looking if you use all your stuns and charges well. ^_^

“Educate yourself on the class and don’t rush the process of getting run through everything and getting handed full epic gear. Saver it. Earn the 5 mans. Earn the 10 mans. Earn the 25 mans.”
I inherited my Warrior, he was a 39 Twink a friend built on my account. He stopped playing, and I started leveling him to 58, with the intention of going Prot and not turning back. I leveled from 58 => 70 as Prot, only in instances (no quests save for those with Tanking gear as a reward). Coming from playing Casters and wanting to understand tanking better… I wanted to be PROT and learn it, instead of getting to 70, then switching without a clue as to how to Tank. Now… I’m the MT for the guild, heh. I didn’t plan on that, but here I am. Since level 58 I have not once… spec’d as DPS again, nor do I plan to.
I wish more people leveled in instances more, or ran things over and over for that “choice” Blue. These days people get to 70, get PVP gear, then sign up for Raids and expect to be handed upgrades… or worse, discount PVE gear as a side-grade and pass on it. WTB hit-capped DPS (^_^)

Great post Vene. I had no idea what tanking was when i rolled my warrior. My first toon was a dwarf hunter and I remember feeling like I should be in close tearing it up, not 25 yards away hitting it with arrows while my pet did the real work. So I rerolled a tauren warrior just because they had the most strength. I thought it would be cool to be swinging a twohander and breaking skulls. Then when I hit 70 some guildmates let it be known that if I ever wanted to raid I better become a tank. I had no idea what that even entailed and was very reluctant to do so. It turned out to be the best thing I ever did. Being upfront and controlling chaos is the biggest rush I’ve gotten out of this game. And nothing compares to popping last stand, shield wall and then shield slamming the final hp off a boss to down them for the first time. The icing on the cake is when the battle is over using your goblin jumper cables to rez the rezzers.

I just loved the idea of close combat with huge 2 handers and shiney big axes :) Played arms up to 60, but when it was time for me and my friends to start doing raids we found ourselves with not enough tanks, so I tried it out and loved it! So ever since our first guild raid to MC I’ve been full prot, MT’ing and proud of it.
For farming I have lvled up a shadow priest and a hunter :)

Leveling from 1-70 straight through with a PROT Spec was probably painful, but I didn’t want to miss out on tanking anything (except Gnome, for that matter).

Why Warrior? Because we’re the frickin’ Rock in the front everything slashes upon and hell do we look better than a Paladin or a Bear doing the same thing. Nothing beats a fully armored Prot Plate Warrior from a point of style. Even my Troll is looking like a frickin’ Bulwark, without those boot-models.

Why tank? Responsibility and the want to lead. I’ve always tried to help tactically, but as a DPSer you’re inevitably becoming kind of a backseat driver in doing so. The best position to lead is in the front and it feels heck of great to get congratulations for your tanking.

Be a great DPSer and you’re one in many. Be a great tank and you’re the one.

My first 70 was my warrior (prot from level 10). My second was a priest (holy from level 10). I unsuccessfully tried to level some DPS classes in the past (rogue, hunter, mage, and warlock). Most of them didn’t get much past 10 before I got bored with them. I’ve recently been leveling an enhancement shammy (sorta twinked at 49 now). I think the reason I like him so much is the crazy amount of damage I can do while dual wielding. So basically, he’s like a fury warrior for me so I don’t have to respec :P

I chose a warrior because of the shield. I like being hammered on by a boss and staying upright. I like bracing myself behind my shield and just taking whatever they can throw at me. When I’m playing MT, I wouldn’t even care if I did no damage. I’d be perfectly happy soaking it up and shouting at the mob to hold its attention. It’s the allure of the immovable object.

I even have a macro series that yells out things like, “Hit harder punk!”, and “Is that all you’ve got” while I’m tanking.

It just feels good and puts a smile on my face.

Since I started I have a whole string of other reasons (I like leading raids, I enjoy the theory behind threat mechanics, a 70 Orc warrior looks cool, etc), but still at it’s base is the “stand there and take it” mentality that makes me happiest.

My first toon was a warrior. For whatever reasons, I couldn’t do the tanking thing right pre-BC, and I soon gave up on it. I leveled a shaman, druid, mage, lock, and hunter to 60. The expansion came out and I switched to a priest for raid healing as needed by the guild. Though healing, I always “studied” up on tanking and really wanted the chance to do it. When my guild collapsed and we all parted ways I was determined to learn to tank. I got into a guild and they allowed me to play my warrior. They offered help and suggestions. Now 6/9 BT and I’ll never look back to another class as my main.

Like Ricky, my main is a Priest. I rolled a warrior recently for a variety of reasons.

    1. I want to understand how the class works so I can possibly better heal my lovable tanks.
    2. I want to be able to speak from experience when I discuss strategy with “tanks” in PUGs. I say “tanks” with quotes because on my server most tanks in PUGs really don’t understand what’s expected of them in groups. They’re either used to their solo tactics or their PVP tactics.
    3. I’ve been trying to convince the warriors in my guild to consider going Prot, to no avail. So, I want to show them an example of what a Prot warrior can actually do and why their skills are so valuable…and how much easier it makes the job of a Priest. :)

And…now that I’ve rolled the warrior, I’m having a ton of fun! Who knew?? :)

A warrior was the third class I tried out within a few weeks of starting WoW. I liked rarely getting killed and being able to take on more mobs at a time than on the other two characters. And then charge sealed the deal.

I like tanking because it takes my full attention most of the time and is challenging. There is always something to improve, gear to tweak, etc. I also like being needed and appreciated by the rest of my raid.

I wouldn’t have thought of Charge to begin with, but now that you mention it that’s the skill that keeps coming to mind when I leveled my alts (”I gotta walk over to that mob too?! That’s no fun…”)

My first warrior was actually my second character. I started with a paladin in a guild that was about 90% paladins. Since most of them seemed to have forgotten to train anything that didn’t do damage, I got volunteered to tank with no idea what the mechanics were like. After a few months of making that poor paladin tank things the original talent trees were never meant to handle (still not sure how on Earth I used to solo tank UBRS with a broken Fury seal), I leveled a warrior. After one instance, it was like “Oh! This is what tanking’s supposed to feel like.”

So I picked a troll (regen is good for someone who can’t heal right?!) and tanked Ragefire Chasm a few weeks later. Got the killing blow on Sacrolash on Monday with a Devastate!

WoW broke my cherry for online gaming. I saw some stories on it’s popularity, and gave it a shot. I defined Nube. I picked a Pally as my first char. Got to about lvl 12, and realized that I just didn’t think that way. So, I simply picked a warrior because it was the closest to how I view myself. Even tried to make the character look like me ;-)

Anyway, I never knew what tanking was when I started to level. I started out dual-wielding, trying to learn the fury and arms talents. I wasn’t introduced to tanking until I started to try the 5-mans. I met some good folks, and they convinced me to try it. Thank god they were patient, but it didn’t take long for me to love it. Once you get the knack, it’s addictive. After I matured as a tank, I rolled a Boomkin to try out DPS casting. I love my Boomkin, but it’ll never have my heart as my tank does. Tanking is much more complex role that requires a variety of skills, including managing a group. It requires a special player to do it well.

My shaman still raidhealing and warriors were the king of the hill in Arena’s so I rolled warrior.

Currently my warrior is Maintanking something and rogues are the ones to beat in pvp so I’m also leveling a rogue.

I rolled a warrior because my guild had a tank shortage, and the very best tank I knew (and ran with constantly on my main, a shadow priest) was a warrior so it seemed like the natural choice. Also, I was intrigued by the challenge, and the prospect of having a leadership role within a group was attractive as well.

I can’t say I’ve enjoyed every second I’ve been a tank (leveling prot is fairly masochistic), and having to slow down the ‘usual pace’ in heroics with my friends has been the cause of some stress, but for the most part I really get a kick out of the complexities of tanking and it’s fun to still be learning something new in every encounter.

I rolled a warrior as part of a contest my guild was having to see who could get one to level 40 first. Also because I wanted to play something a little more durable than my rogue. Since we were on a PVP server and used to getting ganked all the time, I decided I wanted a character that would at the very least make them work for the gank. My warrior has had a shield in his hand since day 1. I have actually had players that were orange or red to me bow and leave after trying to gank me because it wasn’t as easy as they thought it was going to be.

While my original motivation was pvp based I loving tanking. I love grabbing all the aggro and saving the group from a wipe, or at least giving them enough time to run away :) I’ve tried respeccing a couple of times to Arms or Fury and while I do have other warriors with those specs, for some reason it just doesn’t feel right not having that shield in my hand.

I will undoubtedly be a Tank for life.

When I began my Warrior, it was a time before the nerf of rage generation dynamics, when over-geared Warriors were destroying 40-man damage charts and PVP Videos proliferated the internet displaying High Warlord and Grand Marshal Warriors destroying everything.

I was rather impressed with the damage my warrior was capable of achieving and continued leveling him to 70. I even managed to kit him out in full Gladiator’s just a couple of weeks after reaching 70. Unfortunately, the grandeur of damage and PVP had fallen away to reveal the sad truth. There was no easy way to dominate PVP and resilience had destroyed a Warrior’s crit based damage scheme. Thus, I returned to my Warlock and the Warrior fell into disuse.

However, just recently, some friends got together and began to raid Kara. They needed a tank, so I volunteered, sadly, geared in all of my PVP gear. Thanks to two exceptional healers, we managed to pull through our first run and collect some gear despite my pitiful avoidance. (25%, if that) Now, I have quite a few epics and my warrior has come into his own. Tanking is really rather addicting and exciting, and honestly, I never would have guessed before I tried it. You’ve got to give in an honest try, really, it might change your mind about needing that Merc set or those Fists of Brutality.

Never thought I would enjoy a Warrior… my main is a Holy Priest and melee has never had much appeal to me.

Then the Death Knight ‘hero class’ was announced, and I knew I’d be wanting to roll one. One problem- they’re a tanking class.

Sure I could spec it DPS, but I felt I’d be shortchanging myself. And it dawned on me that with the flood of DK’s that is sure to follow Wrath’s release, we’ll have a comparable deluge of bad tanks as non-tank players roll their DK alts and try to play them.

Thus, Gallowbraide was born, a way to learn the fundamentals of tanking while waiting for Wrath. And after so much time spent ‘in the back’ healing, there’s a pure thrill in Charging and pounding away with her. I have to agree that obtaining Charge was a defining moment, and she’s been pure fun.

Tanked my first few instances here in the last week or so, and while I have a long way to go to improve (thus my reading of this site), tanking is a delightful change of pace.

I’ll still be rolling the DK. But Gallow’s here to stay.

I have always been a warrior. When I played as a kid, I smashed things with swords. When I played games like Diablo, I was the warrior. I always thought it was cool to be the big brute smashing things to bit. When I played RPGs I was a warrior. I played a Trollslayer in Warhammer Quest.

It made it just that much easier to choose my first WoW class. The warrior. I didnt start tanking until 60 pre-bc. I was such a nub and was asked if I bought my toon on EBAY. I pugged alot and learned the ropes, and eventually hooked up with my current guild that way. In a way, I am the eternal warrior. I always want something that can smash things with two handed weapons or wear plate.

My warrior is my main…i managed to level a mage to 23 before i got tired of killing things then having to drink and get mana back, warriors are go go go and thats they way i like things. I am also useless at playing a mage as i aways get to within melee range of the mob as thats what seems natural to me….and as a result i always die.

But back to my warrior. In my opinion nothing beats seeing a boss for the first time with the guild, and the raid leader yelling “Go get him Wazz” as i charge head first at an enormous demon who just wants to kill things. everyone else just sits back and doesent even get close enough to smell the demons fear as he realises that he cant kill me!

Thats why i love being a warrior…we are the ones that are always thrown into the unknown and are the first to taste that new boss.

I will never forget seeing khaz’rogal storming towards me for the first time as i am charging at him….the whole guild is depending on me to carry them through the boss fight, i am doing great…until, a mana user explodes and kills me…damn mana, i will never ever play a mana using class :)
