The Trash Caps
Props goes to Satrina for doing the hard work on this one.
For trash mobs (level 82s), the hit and expertise caps are:
177 Hit Rating (5.4%)
22 Expertise Skill (5.5%)
…after which you stack…?
Strength. Or, wear this beauty.

Will the Mirror of Truth still be the trinket of choice once they nerf it to 500atk power?

Veneretio reply on February 24, 2009 12:51 am:
Oh ya, for sure. If your set can afford the loss of a trinket slot (which many trash sets can) then it’s totally worth gaining a crazy amount of crit and some nice AP to up the damage of your AOE and get more Deep Wound procs rolling.

Ivanstone reply on February 27, 2009 10:28 am:
And on the Deep Wounds note:
Broken Promise
Leaves a nice fatty bleed tick. On top of that its easily the best itemized tanking weapon in the game.

Veneretio reply on February 27, 2009 10:36 am:
Haha, I really need to do an entire article on that silly item. For trash, it’s godly… for bosses not so much. It even does less damage than Red Sword or Slayer on bosses b/c it’s so slow for Heroic Striking.
tPaste reply on February 27, 2009 10:56 am:
Agreed. I had a significant increase in tps when I got last laugh after rolling with Broken Promise.
Feist reply on February 24, 2009 7:35 am:
Whut?
Mirror of Truth nerf?
Got a source on that?

Do you bother to get better trash tanking gear, or is that just a set you make with whatever items come your way because your boss set is too much stamina based?
I’m still pretty low level (leveled my mage first) and go round the first instances in ZA and BoJ gear, which makes up for new/in greens healers. But tanking them in BC DPS gear is tempting, when a good healer comes along.

Veneretio reply on February 24, 2009 7:35 am:
The trash set is almost always a combination of your boss threat set with some choice DPS items. Basically, the point of this article is you’re wasting stats if you have too much hit or expertise on trash.

Thx Satrina for all the hard work. Would you know what the caps for the bosses are?

1/
>so you again want 177 rating or 22 expertise skill as noted above
did satrina mean or?
2/
if you need both, are they scalable so if you have 44expertise you just need 90 hit rating?
3/
would be nice with a thorough explanation on miss dodge parry misses and how they are dealt with by hit rating and expertise togheter, any good guide?
4/
so the caps from this article are for bosses?
http://www.tankingtips.com/2009/01/07/expertise-is-always-better-than-hit/
Dodge caps
214 Expertise Rating (26 skill)
= 6.5%
Parry caps
525 Expertise Rating (64 skill)
= 16%
Hit Caps
263 Hit Rating
= 8%

Veneretio reply on February 24, 2009 7:38 am:
You want both 177 hit and 22 expertise and they are not scalable as you put it. I’ll consider doing a post on the combat table in the future. And yes, you’re correct that articles is regarding boss caps.

I use a trash set, just told other tanks if they see me in a cloak without a skull on my back before I pull a boss, let me know
(that means I am in my trash set)
I have both caps reached and over 15% crit, 535def
Mirror of Truth, Sabatons of Sudden Reprisal, Abomination Shoulderblades with +16str gem, Titanium Shield Spike and Darkmoon Card: Vengeance
and I tell you what, this is fun!

If you feel rage starved on Trash, you can always trade in those heavy legplates and feel the breeze with a Loincloth with the Frosthide armor kit on them.

Veneretio reply on February 24, 2009 9:03 am:
I’ve never agreed with tanking without pants. You are far better off throwing on DPS legs than going with nothing. Regardless, I suspect if you’re rage starved on trash then you haven’t read this post:

Ironically, the origin or that “tradition” in my guild was with the healers wanting something to do on Trash. Go figure.
What you loose in effectiveness, you make up in comedy I suppose.

Would you take mirror of truth over the nobles deck (+90 str version)?
[Reply]
Veneretio reply on February 24, 2009 9:04 am:
Either is a fine choice. The nobles deck probably gets a slight nod although it’s certainly not as accessible as Mirror of Truth.
[Reply]
MadTanker reply on February 25, 2009 5:24 pm:
If your basing your trash set on block value for those huge SS’s then the nobles deck will serve you better. The Mirror is a strong 2nd however, and ive seen some warrs collect some strong AP gear to boost TC on trash, the mirror would push up in those cases. AP+good crit would make good aoe threat quickly as well.

Timely post. My guild is stressing speed in getting through the trash in our Naxx runs now. The quicker we get through the farm runs the more time for something else. The challenge with trash is doing enough threat so the mages don’t aggro with their crazy crit percentages. Having a trash set was something I was haphazardly working on but now I have a better idea what to tweak.

I use the “autoblocker” from H VH and the darkmoon greatness card - the beautiful thing about each is that they both proc instantly - where you need them the most in the beginning of the pull. Mirror of truth seems much more random to me with less uptime.

Is the trash Def minimum the same has Heroic bosses 535? or is it lower?

Same deal. 535.

FINALLY,
I’ve been wondering what the hit/exp caps were for a long time. Thank you. I shall update my trash set accordingly.
Plan to Coin/AutoBlock for trinkets though.

Yes, I am definitely a noob when it comes to tanking. I also realize that this site is designed for the lvl 80 (which I’m not - yet). However your site and articles have been a HUGE help so far. So, if you could take a step back to answer my basic question it would be greatly appreciated.
Since there are different Hit Rating and Expertise skill between trash and boss and you state that “you’re wasting stats if you have too much hit or expertise on trash”, leads me to my question. We encounter both trash and bosses during a run, do you carry the extra gear and swap prior to the boss encounter?
[Reply]
Veneretio reply on February 25, 2009 10:52 am:
Yup, you got it, a lot of extra gear. I sport four 22-slot bags and 1.5 (30ish slots) of them are always filled with gear and I only expect this number to increase as I fill out my Block set.
Hehe, there’s a reason that back in the day, I wrote this:
http://www.tankingtips.com/2008/05/27/gearing-yourself-so-you-can-gear-yourself/
Suffice to say, these days, I’d recommend getting 22-slot bags instead of 20s.

Anyone experimented with using a slower weapon as well? I’ve got a 2.6 speed sword I’ve been switching to on trash pulls. Especially since there’s so much multitanking it would seem the cleaves and added devastate damage would help up the total some.

I had a good laugh at myself the other day when, in full tanking gear, was trying to dps a couple of mobs in battle stance and couldn’t figure out why overpower was never lighting up.
Then I remembered my 26 expertise
