The Emblem of Triumph Pick Order
Those of you doing 25 man raids and wondering, should I pick up Trophy of the Crusade? Sorry, this post isn’t for you. Just like the Conquest pick order, we’ll be approaching this list from the perspective of someone who is fairly new to 80. Basically, if you’re doing the Heroic Daily every day for your Triumph emblems. This post is for you. (It should also be useful to you 10 man folk too though)
- Clutch of Fortification (35)
- Headplate of the Honorbound (75)
- Glyph of Indomitability (50)
- Shoulderguards of Enduring Order (45)
- Blades of the Sable Cross (25)
- Hellscream’s Legguards of Conquest (50)
- Hellscream’s Handguards of Conquest (30)
- Hellscream’s Breastplate of Conquest (50)
Skip: Hellscream’s Greathelm of Conquest, Hellscream’s Pauldrons of Conquest
I don’t agree!
Alright, here’s why I picked these how I did!
1. One Ring to Rule them all
Clutch of Fortification is an easy first choice as it’s often difficult to find 2 strong rings. Well after you pick up this, the process is going to get a lot easier because you won’t be replacing this ring again. It’s currently the best ring in the game.
2. Honor thy Helm
Headplate of the Honorbound bests even the Tier 9.5 helm making it the 2nd best helm in the game only to the Tier 9.75 which if you care about this list, you won’t have access to for quite a while. (as of right now, no one has access to it)
3. The Indomitable
Glyph of Indomitability provides an Armor bonus on level with Heart of Iron’s Stamina bonus, but what truly makes it special is it’s powerful usage. The most powerful usage currently in the game to be exact. A usage so strong that once another round of trinkets have been added to the game, it’s going to be very difficult to decide whether we should use it or Juggernaut’s Vitality. (Early Answer: It’ll depend on the fight)
4. Show for Shoulders
Shoulderguards of Enduring Order is extremely well itemized as well as a full tier ahead of Hellscream’s Pauldrons of Conquest which is why I recommend picking it up over the Tier 9. It’s another piece with a ton of longevity as I’d only replace it with the Tier 9.5/9.75 shoulders instead.
5. The Best Blades
Blades of the Sable Cross marks the first clear upgrade over our friendly neighborhood shotgun. Is it a huge upgrade? Nope, but it’s an upgrade nonetheless which is why it appears 4th on our pick list.
6. Not so Hot Leg
Hellscream’s Legguards of Conquest isn’t itemized how I’d want a tanking piece’s stats spent, but there’s no denying that it offers big Stamina, Armor, Defense and Threat gains over anything else you’re going to be picking up during your gallivanting in heroics. Would I use these over Saronite Plate Legguards? No, but that is the first piece I’d say that bests it so you will be using these legs for quite a while.
7. A bit Handy
Hellscream’s Handguards of Conquest are a nice upgrade over the Gauntlets of the Royal Watch that you should already have from Conquest emblems at this time. You might be thinking… why waste emblems of conquest when I can get my Tier 9 for emblems of triumph? Well, if you follow my list and you only do the daily, it’s going to take you 155 days to get to this point. Probably still worth getting the Gauntlets of the Royal Watch, eh?
8. Chester Chicken of Conquest
Hellscream’s Breastplate of Conquest is really well itemized, but because it’s such a small upgrade over the Conqueror’s Siegebraker Breastplate that you should already have, it finds itself near the bottom of the triumph pick order.
The Daunting Task
In case you missed the comment under “A bit Handy”, it’s going to take you a long, long time to get enough Triumph emblems for everything on the list. If you can find the time to do the Heroic Daily every day, that’s a very good thing, but it’s still going to take a long time. You’ll notice a major theme with how I justify my picks and that is that it’s based primarily on longevity. I know it’s tempting to pick up the Blades of the Sable Cross because they’re cheap, but I ask that you resist the urge, craft the shotgun and follow the list to get you the big upgrades first.
To those of you in 25s, I think the biggest change is I’d skip the non-set shoulders and get your Tier 9.5 shoulders using a Trophy whenever you acquire one instead. Also as a 25 man raider, I’ll be picking up the legs last.

Great post! thanks.
But I think I will get Wrynn’s Pauldrons of Conquest first just because 30 badges are a bargain for tier shoulders. Usually tier shoulders are off end boss in a raid and symbolizes a person who has completed the raid.

Honestly I think you would be better off saving 15 more and getting the Shoulders of Enduring Order a much better overall piece. The two set for warriors is lack luster at best. If you really want a piece of t9 as your first purchase get the gloves.

TomHuxley reply on September 3, 2009 3:18 pm:
Ok, granted there is no question that the non-tier shoulders off a LOT more survivability, but with how little expertise is on T9 gear I actually think it’s sort of situational as to which works out better. At tier 9 DPS that know their stuff should make your life a bit difficult if you fall significantly below the expertise soft-cap.
Of course if you can easily stay at or near the soft cap, there’s no question that the non-tier shoulders are head and…shoulders…better than the base T9.

I chose the trinket as #2 in my list. I’m not finding a ton of spelldamage in the collesium and my calculations show that this trinket gives me similar effective health as the JC trinket. The JC trinket increases my HP around 3.5% and the trinket reduces incoming physical damage 4.1%.
Pesonally, I’d have this ranked much higher on the list if we’re assuming a starting point of the JC trinket and Black Heart. I tie the trinket’s use into my last stand macro with enraged regen to create a nice backup trouble button to shieldwall.
[Reply]
Veneretio reply on August 31, 2009 9:32 am:
The really hax thing about the JC trinket is that it’s usage is only a 1 minute cooldown which makes it hard to beat. Even if you do value the Glyph higher than it, the difference would be very small, you have to admit. The other pieces offer far larger stat gains which is why they’re ranked higher on the list.

While I agree mostly with the list, your comment about those of us in 25s should get the T9.5 shoulders instead of the badge ones, I feel is incorrect. I chose the badge ones over the 9.5 shoulders because of the parry over the expertise. I think it’s more situational dependent on how much expertise you already have. But, parry is a great stat and those of us who are close enough to the expertise dodge cap don’t need more expertise. Extra avoidance is nice.
But, for the most part. Very nice list.
Thanks for compiling.

Solowar reply on September 1, 2009 3:42 am:
At 1st glance, Shoulderplates of Enduring Order looks to be offering much more avoidance with the defense, dodge and parry ratings than T9.5. But at a closer look, depending on how you gem both pieces, the avoidance gap is not really that big.
Comparing T9.5 vs Shoulderplates of Enduring Order,
Case 1: Assuming both pieces are socketed with 30sta epic gem (meaning only T9.5 will get the socket bonus of 4dodge rating). Stats comparsion:
T9.5 gains:
- 14 defense rating (~2.85 defense rating, ie. ~0.34% avoidance)
- 26 dodge rating (~0.57% avoidance)
[total avoidance from defense and dodge = 0.91%]
- 43 expertise rating (1.31% expertise)
Shoulderplates of Enduring Order gains:
- 24 strength
- 53 parry rating (~1.17% avoidance)
Wearing T9.5 gains a 1.31% expertise while losing 24 strength (12block value) and 0.26% avoidance.
So, it’s the extra threat boost+parry haste reduction+possibility of completing 2/4 pieces set bonus VS the 0.26% avoidance.
Case 2:
Assuming both pieces are socketed to take advantage of the socket bonus, going with 30sta epic gem for T9.5 and 15sta/10dodge epic gem for Shoulderplates of Enduring Order. Stats comparsion:
T9.5 gains:
- 9 stamina
- 14 defense rating (~2.85 defense rating, ie. ~0.34% avoidance)
- 16 dodge rating (~0.35% avoidance)
[total avoidance from defense and dodge = 0.69%]
- 43 expertise rating (1.31% expertise)
Shoulderplates of Enduring Order gains:
- 24 strength
- 53 parry rating (~1.17% avoidance)
You gain the same chunk of expertise wearing T9.5 while also getting an extra 9stamina. However, this time, you’ll lose more avoidance at ~0.48%. Similiarly, you have to choose between the extra threat boost+parry haste reduction+possibility of completing 2/4 pieces set bonus+9sta or the 0.48% avoidance.
Of course, it’s possible to socket other pure avoidance gem but sta and sta/avoidance gems should be the norm for progressing content.
Personally, i would choose T9.5 over Shoulderplates of the Enduring Order as my target would be the T9.5 shoulder and glove for the tier set bonus with Headplate of the Honorbound, Chestplate of the Towering Monstrosity and Legplates of Feverish Dedication.

I would like for Blizzard to properly itemize and make Tier gear better than random drops… just once. We should strive to wear a full set of gear, instead of random pickup pieces. Instead they make it a hard choice of what 2 pieces do you wanna wear for a crappy set bonus, or what better gear do you want to give up for a decent 4 piece bonus.
I suppose a lot of this will get cleared up in the Xpac, but I would like some insight into their decisions about itemization and who is in charge of such things. It seems like they just take older pieces of gear, and increase their stats based on the “item points” available at a higher iLevel.
[Reply]
Veneretio reply on September 1, 2009 9:18 am:
Personally, I like how it is. I feel that it’s suppose to be a choice and not an easy one. After all, Tier gear really is easier to acquire. If Tier gear was clearly better then why even drop the non-Tier stuff? I don’t know about you, but I’m not a huge fan of getting pieces that last a week or two nor dealing with people that are unwilling to take upgrades because they’re waiting for their BiS.
Ultimately, all they can do is keep things exactly how they are or make Tier gear more scarce again and make it more powerful. I don’t think we can have Tier gear both more available and more powerful.
Cleaved reply on September 1, 2009 1:47 pm:
I think the other pieces of gear should encompass the other slots, and provide flexibility. Tier gear has set bonuses, and those should be geared towards the content we are doing, and possibly be the best choice for pure tanking. We should all build threat sets and various other gear sets based on our style of play. However, Tier gear should be there as the best you can get, for those particular slots. They give us 5 pieces and a 4 set bonus, which would allow for mixing and matching as needed.
I think it works okay how it is. I just wish Tier gear would be better or at least on par with some items that you can get off of much easier bosses (in some cases).

Great list as usual Vene.
I must admit the ring is pretty tasty. I had a hell of a time deciding on what piece to get first. My guild has been doing both 10/25 man ToC, so I decided to hold off and get the T9(245) shoulders as my first piece once I could snag a trophy. Then last week I got http://www.wowhead.com/?item=47888 ,little brother of http://www.wowhead.com/?item=47731 from 10man.
I’m finding with the way Blizzard has it setup now it truly to be much more daunting trying to deciding on pieces. I can’t say I’m in love with the way many of the new Tier pieces are itemized. I know the rule of thumb is still exp > hit, but it seems almost everything is swimming in expertise as the expense of hit. I still like to have some balance on my stats, even on EH set.
Anyway, definitely think I’m going to pickup the ring today before we hit ToC. Thanks again for the post.

We curently farming ToC normal with 1 shotting all bosses when they where released. I am still over-gearing the insantce so will wait abit more .. just to see what heroic ToC drops i will get.
Crafted chest aint a option… as the BiS chest drops from heroic Northrend Beasts.
Head and shoulders badge gear is much better then T9.5 items. Not a big fan of the 2/4 set bonuses .. so will just go for BiS this time.
Dont like the idea of any player can get 5 BiS items only with badges farmed from a crappy heroic( will take them some time…but still get them )

Tet reply on September 1, 2009 2:42 pm:
Where are you getting this “BiS” list? Sounds terrible considering T9.75 is way better than offset head and shoulders.
http://www.wowhead.com/?compare=48470;47699
http://www.wowhead.com/?compare=47678;48468
Helm isn’t that much better because of the Expertise but it is way better when it comes to EH, and shoulders aren’t even a contest.
So how is the offset shoulder BiS when T9.75 is SO MUCH Better? Your list is horribly misinformed.
BiS chest does drop from Icehowl - but the Heroic version is the true BiS considering its ilvl258 as opposed to normal 25m ilvl 245. Here’s the comparison between crafted and ilvl245 chest:
http://www.wowhead.com/?compare=47591;46962
and here is the hardmode version of the chest:
http://db.mmo-champion.com/i/46968/chestplate-of-the-towering-monstrosity/
Now compare to the T9.5 and T9.75:
http://www.wowhead.com/?compare=47591;46962;48461;48466
T9.75 has so much more avoidance and is a superior EH item as well even compared to the hardmode Towering Monstrosity, yet towering monstrosity has a lot of expertise if you’re lacking that.
Remember that T9 is now in 3 different pieces: 10m (ilvl 232 or of Conquest), 25m Normal (ilvl245 or of Conquest) and 25m Hardmode (ilvl 258 or of Triumph) which is why your list might be wrong if its comparing with normal mode t9 (aka t9.5)
My biggest gripe is that the new set bonuses suck compared to my T8.5 4-piece, and because of that I haven’t really replaced my pieces. Anyone have that situation?

Prunetracy reply on September 3, 2009 10:45 am:

I think most of us should have the Leviathan’s Coil. The decision to pick the Clutch is based on whether you will wear it with the Coil, replacing the Signet of the Impregnable Fortress or if you will replace the Coil with the Clutch. I’d like to wear both the Coil and the Clutch but I’d have to find a way to replace the 27 hit, 21 expertise and 16 defense. Makes it a harder decision.
As a result I’d move the shoulders up to the first pick.

Only 72 more badges till I get the helm!

Regarding [i]Blades of the Sable Cross[/i], I tend to consider Vene’s general view of longevity with them. Will they be replaced again before the end of this expansion?
Probably not.
That alone would put them slightly further up the list for me. But that’s kind of the point; to a certain extent, your choices are down to what state your gear is currently in and I tend to prize expertise over most other stats, purely because warriors are generally pretty poor in the comparative threat stakes.

Great list, as are all the token\badge lists you’ve done, Vene. I’m thinking to tweak the order slightly, since I’m still rocking the Abomination shoulders, and raid drops have been unkind. So SoEO outrank the ring currently, since I’ve got Mark of the Relentless and Lev’s Coil. I agree that the ring won’t be upgraded anytime soon, but the upgrade from shoulders vastly outperforms the upgrade from the rings, and is only a week’s worth of daily quests away. Or have I missed the point?

Awesome list. I picked up the ring first then the T9 shoulders and just recently the helm which is awesome. Now I’ll be setting my sights on the shoulders unless we’re able to take down some heroic modes at which I’ll look at the T9.75 gear.
Although not a priority, one question I have is regarding expertise and hit. Currently, I’m sitting at 180 hit and 27 expertise with my new helm. My question is does this combination of the two effectively make me “hit capped”? I know the goal is 8% (I think around 235-240 hit) or so however I’m curious to know if a combination of two can do this as well. Anyone know?

While yea, for threat and pure stamina (but only by 5 stam with solid majestic) you might want that ring, Cluth is better in every other area. Half thousand of armor (so higher mitigation and EH), defence instead of parry (with new math around ideal avoidance stats’ ratio more than 540def seems to be a must).

As a 10-man raider i would say i agree with the list with the possible exception of first pick if you are running only 10-man and possibly a 25-man FL every now and then you could have both Seal of Ulduar and The Leviathan’s Coil in which case Headplate of the Honorbound is a better first pick from a stat uppgrade point of view, ofc. the only real difference in that case is that you swich the 2 first times on the list.
The extra stamina gained from the helm compared to the ring was the only thing that gave us our first Beasts HM kill with a close call with me at 120 HP for a few seconds after the last Impale.

Nice list Vene and Im trying to follow it (patience is hard)
Since the Emblems of Triump also can be used to buy crusader orbs shouldn’t the crafted pieces be on the list too ?
I mean where would The breatsplate of the White knight and Saronite swordbreakes be compared to the list ?

Hi there,
I’m curious if you have any plans for a post on gear comparisons from the new instances verses the list here. It seems to me that PoS, HoR and FoS both normal and Heroic have gear that is comparable to the Triumph list you’ve come up with. I really haven’t put in a great deal of time researching and comparing and although it seems that the Triumph list is still better I’m curious as to how well the new gear holds up in your opinion?
Thanks!

Silvernite. As a quick reply. You might try the following website http://www.maxdps.com. While it is not perfect, it is a nice quick way to get a basic idea. It does encompass the protection warrior.

I need to ask this as I am getting confused these days. I have been speccing for dodge/block over parry and stamina. Therefore my warrior is probably a lot less health than most (33K unbuffed) with a high dodge/block rating. Looking at a lot of the newer set items though, block isn’t as easily gained and I wonder if I shouldn’t be now steering towards pure dodge and stamina, but tbh I see that as more a feral druid style of tanking.
Anyone willing to help me find my way again..

As a new player, this is a very useful piece. It would be very helpful if you offered an update that sort of revisited the Triumph pick order post 3.3.

I agree!
I’m still pug tanking my way through the 70s, and I’d love to know both how to spend my emblems of frost right when I hit 80, and what I should be saving for as I acquire emblems of triumph.
Thanks so much for your blog, it’s helped us lowbies a lot!

I think it was mentioned somewhere in here already, but if you’ve got a decent supply of lvl 80 alts (I have 4 80 toons myself) you can make getting your crafted pieces happen a lot more quickly. I’ve got my Frost belt, gloves, cloak and T10 shoulders, working on the T10 helmet now, and I’ve already had my Pillars of Might crafted without spending a single Frost Emblem earned by my main on Primordial Saronite.
