Refreshing Sunders: A Cataclysm Niche?

Recently, we got a look at some new Cataclysm glyphs and after my initial reaction of /yawn, the new Heroic Throw glyph got me thinking…

But first, here it is:

Heroic Throw Glyph
Your Heroic Throw applies a stack of Sunder Armor.

I pull the mob. It gets a Sunder Armor stack. Probably makes Heroic Throw do a bit more threat. /yawn

But Wait!!!

Since the rule is that anything that applies a stack of Sunder Armor inevitably will refresh Sunder Armor, I can use this to refresh Sunder Armor from range. Sweet!

Which got me thinking…

Gag Order (1,2) reduces the cooldown of Heroic Throw by 15/30 seconds. This reduces the cooldown of Heroic Throw to 45/30 seconds.

The Sunder Armor debuff lasts 30 seconds.

That means that I can apply Sunder Armor to a target then go tank another target and then use Heroic Throw to maintain the Sunder Armor debuff on a 2nd target! From Ranged!!!

Wait… no I can’t. A 30 second Sunder Armor debuff + a 30 second Heroic Throw cooldown = an axe flying through the air hitting the target just in time… to maintain nothing.

Sunder Armor debuff length +5/10/30?

As of right now, there is no combo, but why shouldn’t their be? Isn’t this exactly the type of little edge that’s suppose to exist between tanking classes? After all, we’d still have to rely on a dps warrior getting the 2nd mob started, walk over and start it ourselves or wait over a minute until the 3rd Sunder finally landed making the mob fully debuffed. (In case you didn’t know, Sunder Armor is going from a 5 stack debuff to a 3 stack debuff)

The question is what’s a good/realistic increase to the length of the Sunder Armor debuff?

+5 seconds makes the combo at least possible.
+10 seconds makes the combo convenient.
+30 seconds makes the combo possible with only a single point in Gag Order. (And really convenient)

All good options.

This is an EASY way for you to show us some love, Blizz

Just do it.

Well, if this is considering trash, then it wouldn’t be a huge stretch to say we’d have at least one mob down before 30 seconds are up. With trash, as well, we could probably switch to the Glyph of Sunder Armor to spread the fun.

…oo, that’s another potential extra for it. Do you think the Glyph of Sunder Armor will affect the Heroic Throw sunder, as well? If so, that’s two targets with Sunder Armor at the start of the pull from range. And if there are two ranged targets you’ll be going for after the first mob is down? There you go. A single Charge after your first target is down and their armor is worthless.

I love where you’re going with this, Glyph of Sunder Armor should totally work with this. Now if only Sword and Board gave us Heroic Throw procs…

ha ha ha.. LOVE IT. This would be awesome.
Would it be going too far to have glyph of Sunder, glyph of Devastate, and glyph of heroic throw? LOL

Two stacks of sunder up quickly (throw, charge, deva) might be good for the dps folks.

Another way to get there might be to add “and extends the duration of your Sunder Armor debuff by 30%” to the Sunder Armor glyph.

Hey, I can dream, can’t I? It does sound really fun though.

Would be good to change the glyph from affecting a nearby mob to increasing the duration instead. Make it a minor glyph too!

    Great idea, Vene!

I’m sure the warrior community could get behind this and make Blizz here us.

I must say. This renews my hope that glyphs in Cata will add that bit of flavour I’ve been searching for. Wrath glyphs were a bit of a let down. Most were crap, and a few became the default choices.

tbh, i was thinking of this glyph more for a dps warrior. instead of having to use a GCD on a sunder (which does zero damage), i could use HT to refresh the stack.

    still doesn’t work with 1 min CD + 30 sunders though…

It’d be a nice addition to the utility of a prot war, great idea.

I think what this is intended for is DPS warriors in 10 mans, on fights where you have to move away from the boss for a period of time. I know I’ve been in that situation before, and cursed not being able to sunder from range. It seems odd to put this in now, though, with sunders being less important/taking less time to re-stack.

Veneretio reply on September 2, 2010 8:07 pm:

I don’t think it’s fair to say that it taking less time to re-stack Sunder Armor makes it less important. If anything it makes this glyph more potent than it would be on live since it represents a higher percentage of a full Sunder Armor stack.

I thought they were keeping the armor reduction the same on each stack, thus reducing the full stack amount?

Def. has good synergy with those fights where a mob is hovering/flying for 30+ seconds. One less thing to do when it lands.

Will the change to the 3 stack of sunder from the 5 stack up a single sunders effectiveness? meaning, will a 3 stack of post cata sunders equil a 5 stack of wraths?

Henla reply on September 13, 2010 4:11 am:

the sunder armor debuff is being reduced from 20% for 5 stacks to 12% from 3 stacks..

so a single stack is still worth 4%

they nerfed sunder armor a bit..

Hmmm all of this seems very interesting!! However would blizzard Ever make it so we have multiple glyphs affecting one attack? I mean, wouldn’t it be like having multiple glyphs of cleave? They wouldn’t stack, it would prob be one or the other sry if I am wrong.
